Free Music Review: Very good overall, first movement is gloriously done

Slatkin's cycle of Vaughan Williams symphonies was never the one to receive the most attention. I cannot say I have heard all of it, but at least his interpretation of the first symphony contains some excellent things; not the least the very opening where the breadth and power is unrivalled. In fact, the whole first movement is glorious, swaggering, climactic and exciting, and the orchestral playing (especially the brass) is impressive - better, I'd say, than on any of the rival accounts
The soloists are, perhaps, the main drawback - Allen is splendid, but I am less sure about Valente who seems to lack the power and confidence required for this work (the chorus is generally fine, but perhaps a little anonymous). And even the playing and conducting in the remaining movements isn't fully on the level of the first, but still generally excellent and superior to most rival accounts .
Although I know some people disagree, I have no reservations about the sound quality either, which is warm and detailed. In the end, I think Handley is the most obvious choice for this powerful but maybe a little sprawling work, but if Handley wins it'll be by a hair's breadth. This version can, all in all, be safely recommended.
