Free Music Review: Sick Stuff...Amaaazing
Hit: 5 Stars

This is one of my favorite bands. They always have been ever since their self titled in 98 i think. This album is billed as B-Sides and Rarities, but they are really just recordings that didn't make it onto Toxicity. They didn't make it on not because they weren't good enough, but simply because Serj didn't think they fit with Toxicity's theme. I personally think this CDis a lot better than Toxicity. There is not enough praise in the world to give to this band. Acid tongued lyrics, crunching riffs, sick drumbeats, amazing basslines, insane vocals, this band is just perfect. Chic n' stew is about advertising and a great way to open a cd. Innervision and Bubbles follow. Boom! is a really catchy song about war. I don't like Nuguns that much. American Dream Denial is probably the best song on the cd, about anti-war and historical atrocities. Mr. Jack is a slower Spider-like song. I-E-A-I-A-O is probably my favorite song on the cd. Awesome middle-eastern chorus and a cool rapping part. 36 is kind of a stupid filler track but it flows very nicely into Pictures which has really odd lyrics. Highway song is next, which is my other favorite. Amazing chorus. Then comes the System, a very anti-government song with a really cool guitar part. Egobrain is a slower song with a kind of uneasy chorus. Thetawaves is really powerful. Roulette is the softest SOAD song ever, written almost ten years ago. Serj displays a softer voice on this one and there are no drums on this track. Lastly is streamline, which I would say is the best song but I've heard it way too many times (it is also on the Scorpion King Soundtrack). It would be downright foolish not to own this CD

Free Music Review: Steal This, but Steal the Proper Albums First
Hit: 5 Stars

One bad side of the file-sharing craze is when artists find that people are getting ahold of songs that were never met for the public. Apparently System of a Down felt compelled to release this album to make the profits they deserve from their work, after finding that the fans (and probably some non-fans) were trading all these studio outtakes. So this disc is not really a fitting introduction to the band if you're a beginner, because these songs were clearly not meant to be presented as a distinct album. Make yourself familiar with their two proper albums first, especially the brilliant and much more focused Toxicity.

For fans however, this disc does show all of the band's strengths, proving that they're among the most musically accomplished and uncompromising bands working today. You can also see that underneath their militant political stance, they don't take themselves too seriously, which is very refreshing. Here we can also see some extra variety to the band's songwriting that is not apparent on the more focused proper albums, like the conventional rock elements in "Bubbles" and the funk-influenced riffage in "F**k the System." There's even (gasp!) an acoustic love song in "Roulette." There are a few problematic moments here, like the badly undeveloped "36" and the goofy lyrics in "Chic N Stu," the world's meanest song about having the munchies. Fortunately these are balanced by dead-serious tracks like "Mr. Jack" and "Ego Brain." In the end, this collection continues to solidify the deadly System of a Down approach and even expands their palette, but you have to understand where they're truly coming from first.

Free Music Review: Steal This Album - A Crucial Link
Hit: 5 Stars

When Los Angeles Nu-Metal quartet, System of a Down recorded Toxicity they recorded 33 tracks but chose 14 for the album. The remaining tracks, along with past pre-recorded work were left for a future that might not of been. But these tracks eventually leaked on to the internet and began circulating around the globe. In early 2002 when System of a Down heard about it, they were dissapointed that unfinished recordings were spreading like wildfire on the web. Eager to finish the tracks 100% The band got together and finished some Toxicity Outtakes and some tracks from as early as 1995 and put Steal This Album! together. The album consists of 16 tracks, from the quirky Chic 'N' Stu, (referring to advertisement and that it causes the need for the item), to acoustic Roulette,(Which Daron Malakian has been working on for 8 years). Daron Malakian admits that the album might not of seen the light of day if the tracks were'nt spread over the internet but stress in the future to wait until their tracks are officialy released as the unfinished versions isnt System's 100%

Serj Tankian stresses to fans that Steal This Album! is not to be taken as an outtakes or B-Side album, but an album in itself. "Steal This Album! was'nt released to buy time for our next studio album, it is a crucial link from Toxicity to our next album. It is an example of what we've done and what we are capable of doing."

Steal This Album is a definate buy for fans and may need to be listened to a few times for first timers. If this is what System plan to put out for us, then their long awaited next album will be huge!

Free Music Review: Classic SOAD
Hit: 5 Stars

This latest System of a Down CD marks a return to the band's classic sound, message and mindset (or lack thereof). Toxicity, while an excellent album in many ways, failed to recapture the frenetic and witty tone of the self-titled debut. While Steal This Album doesn't play at the breakneck pace of their first album, it displays the same wit, insanity, and political acumen (a complete bundle of contradictions). Songs like "IEAIAIOand "Pictures" showcase some of Serj Tankian's crazy vocals which were mostly absent from Toxicity. Daron's harmonizing vocals are less intrusive and seem to fit better, or maybe I'm just getting used to him. His guitar work is heavy, solid, and at times mirrors Serj's vocals. In terms of content, the band's political views seem to have crystallized and the album presents a cohesive and powerful message denouncing globalization and lifting up the individual. Songs like "A.D.D." and "Boom!" and "Mr. Jack" drive this message home. My only real complaint is that a couple of songs near the end of the album like "Ego Brain" and "Thetawaves" kind of drag and don't match up with the rest of the disc. The beautiful "Roulette" and the catchy "Streamline" make up for it.

So, in spite of its occasional lapses, I still give this CD five stars for its in-your-face yet deep yet quirky style, for its potent political message, and for its overall refusal to conform to the machine of popular music. It's really a shame that this album didn't get a lot of promotion, because it's one of the best albums of the year. Rock on SOAD.
