Free Music Review: One of my best musical discoveries ever...
Hit: 5 Stars

This is probably one of the best metal albums I have ever heard. I'm starting to wish I bought the actual CD instead of the MP3 album, but even so it was a great buy, just without the booklet and the artwork and all. But putting that aside, the song-writing in this album is just fantastic. I love how they sing in both their native language, which of course is F?roese, as well as English. They also have some of the most stunning melodies I've ever heard from any metal band, and their guitar harmonies are played VERY well, I've never heard a band do what they do. Everything about Tyr is great, the guitars, steady-paced drums, choir-like vocal style, and even the bass player stands out! Once you hit the play button you never want to hit the stop/pause button. This is one of those very few bands who are all-around perfect with everything. You can clearly hear lots of classical influence in their music as well. I've heard many bands with traces of classical in their roots, but unlike those bands Tyr keeps true to both classical AND metal, equalizing both making a really great mix-up of the two genres. You can also hear traces of other influences such as Dream Theater.

I usually don't break things down by instruments, but I'll make a special exception for this review. =P

VOCALS: First of all, as mentioned earlier, you will never hear a growl nor a scream from Tyr. Their vocal-style is rather soothing if you ask me. I love when all band members sing at once (yes, even the drummer!), they sound like a small, yet very powerful choir. The lead vocalist has a very distinguishable voice and really does a fine job arranging the parts. The cool thing is they sing in a sort of classical-era style, using soprano, alto, tenor and bass parts... Or maybe I'm just saying that because I'm a music theory student studying part-writing. =P Either way, I usually don't pay much attention to vocals, but you can't help but notice the harmony and melody in their style. This is probably what makes Tyr's music a work of art.

GUITARS: Just wow. I've heard some great harmony in my days, but never like Tyr's. The very first time I heard their music, my first thought on the guitars was "Woah, those harmonies sound really weird, but so cool at the same time!" Again, like the vocals, they've done well with arranging these parts, both lead and rhythm. One of my favorite melodies on the whole album is the intro to their version of the traditional Irish folk tune, "The Wild Rover." I also love their use of natural harmonics (when you barely touch the string and pluck) in "The Edge," something most metal bands don't use much. This is another main reason why I'd love to own a 7-string guitar sometime in the future (my first main reason being Jeff Loomis from Nevermore).

DRUMS: Not a whole lot to say on the drum parts except that they are played excellently. This is another thing that stands out with Tyr when they play really odd time-signatures. There isn't much emphasis on double bass, but you can hear some here and there throughout the album. Most of the time they play at a moderate pace, no typical gallop rhythms, no blast beats or super-fast double bass. But still, the drummer does an excellent job nonetheless. If you like Nick O' Brian from Iron Maiden, you may like their drumming style as well.

BASS: Very few metal bands these days have halfway decent basslines. But Tyr's bassist plays some of the most flawless parts I've ever heard in a metal band. This guy is like the Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) of viking metal, he doesn't just stand there and play the root notes all the time. Even he plays some of Tyr's best melodies! And that's a lot coming from a bass player. There are even some points, at least in their album Ragnarok, where he even harmonizes with the guitarists! Talk about talent!

This album gets an easy 5 stars from me. If you like and appreciate music as an art and have an open mind, I HIGHLY suggest this album. As a matter of fact, I think that every living metalhead should own this... So what're you waiting for?! BUY IT NOW!!!

Eric the Red Poster

The Faroe Islands' lone metal band, TYR have also produced the island's best-selling album, now finally available domestically. Few Viking metal bands can compare to TYR's classy style: stirring choruses, catchy melodies, lyrics sung in Faroese (a derivative of Old Norse) and triumphant guitar harmonies. Influenced by tradition and free of kitsch, TYR usher in a new era of sophistication!
