Free Music Notes for Dear ScienceFree Music Review: Well-deserved "best-of" status Hit: 5 Stars
I'm seeing Dear Science on a lot of "best of 2008" lists. This status is well-deserved. Like the best of creative musicians, this talented group has made music that is both challenging and listenable, retaining key elements of their complex sound from an earlier, break-out cd, Return To Cookie Mountain, while evolving the mix of instruments and sounds in pleasing ways. The lyrics have a contemporary feel and strike a note of hope amidst chaos, certainly resonant with the tenor of these times.
Free Music Review: A huge leap forward Hit: 5 Stars
I hesitate to compare TVOTR to Radiohead, but Radiohead must have been an influence on this band. I think the comparison is strongest when comparing the evolution of the two bands. The progression from Return to Cookie Mountain to Dear Science is about as enormous as was Radiohead's leap from The Bends to OK Computer. I would strongly recommend listening to this from start to finish several times, as it gets MUCH better each time, and the layers of the songs become more apparent.
Free Music Review: Even better than Return to Cookie Mountain Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great album. Everything is very tight and textured. Dancing Choose is now one of my favorite songs. More melodic and interesting than Return to Cookie Mountain. Every song has segments of calm that build into fantastic outbursts of energy that gives you the chills. Top 5 of the past 10 years. Really.
Free Music Review: Glimmering, multi-layered fun Hit: 5 Stars
Much better than Cookie Hill, but needs repeated listening to appreciate. A little too much hip-hop influence for my taste, however, as I sensed Outkast rubbed off on these guys, and not in a good way.
Free Music Review: Leading candidate for album of the year Hit: 5 Stars
It's like a modern day, dance-rock, souped-up Purple Rain 2.0. I can't stop listening to it.
