Free Music Notes for Taboo (2003 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: A Monumental Broadway Production Hit: 5 Stars
I don't want to gush too much, but listening to the new Broadway recording last night, it was like seeing the show live again. The highlights include Euan Morton's haunting Stranger In This World (this should be released as a single) and beautiful Pretty Lies; Raul Esparza's heartbreaking Petrified; Liz McCartney's showstopper Talk Amongst Yourselves (Brooke Elliott did a terrific job when McCartney was out on maternity leave!). You get 21 songs here, I'm sure you'll agree with me that Boy George is a genius, the music is amazing, touching and beautiful one moment and rugged rock and roll the next. I still wonder why this show did not catch on, I saw it five times and loved it more each time. Lastly, for all of his 1980's success, I think Boy George's material really shines here...I'm not sure if I have or will ever see another Broadway musical that moved me or the audience this much, it got a standing ovation for every performance.
Free Music Review: Amazing show, amazing music! Hit: 5 Stars
Taboo has a great score and a great cast to perform it. I saw the show once, not knowing what to expect, but by the first number "Freak/Ode To Attention Seekers" I fell in love with it, and the rest was just as good. The songs are great and the cast is very talented. Someone who would be put off by the visuals of the show should still give the music a try (I got some friends in school to listen who I know would never have seen the show, and they liked the music).
I was disappointed that Boy George's score did not win a Tony, nor did the two actors nominated for their roles, Euan Morton and Raul Esparza, who were fantastic. Sadly, it is too late to see the show anymore, but the music still lives on. This album is a great addition to a CD collection and I reccommend buying it if you have not already done so!
Free Music Review: Great Recording of a Terrific Show! Hit: 5 Stars
I was fortunate enough to see this cast do the show a week before they closed. It was so unfortunate that it closed as I am sure it would have found an audience, but for whatever reasons... However, this recording is just terrific and captures the incredible ensemble cast: Euan Morton ("Stranger In This World" was haunting onstage and still delivers on the CD), Liz McCartney ("Talk Amongst Yourselves"-great ballad) and the hilarious Jeffrey Carlson as Marilyn. Of course Boy George was a trip and his lyrics and especially his tuneful music are steller and we need more hit writers like him on Broadway. Thank you Rosie, you done good! I'm sorry it didn't run but this recording helps the memory (and gives those TABOO newcomers a great taste of this wondeful show).
Free Music Review: Absolutely PHENOMINAL!! Hit: 5 Stars
Okay so I'm not a fan of Boy George, but I was very interested in this musical. It got a lot of hype but bad hype unfortuntately. I wish it was on Broadway longer because after listening to it over and over I definately would be there right now! I just can't believe it's cancelled. The music is incredible and should have won Best Original Score (Avenue Q? Thanks but I'll pass). The music is a mix of styles mainly Rock and pop. My favorite songs are "Petrified", "Love Is A Question Mark" and "Everything Taboo." I **REALLY** hope this show returns or they make it into a movie because if you're curious like I was BUY IT!! You CERTAINLY won't be dissapointed. It's constantly playing in my CD player!!
Free Music Review: AWESOME Hit: 5 Stars
In the wonderful hybrid of meshing musical with pop in the vein of rent, aida, camp, and moulin rouge, taboo has an instantly likeable soundtrack. There are some very catchy songs on the record, and many could stand alone apart from the show, though many are humorous in its context. Wonderful job boy george! My favorite songs are: 4, dress to kill, with its electronic retro-dance feel 7, sexual confusion, very funny sort of "gay anthem" 11, do you really want to hurt me 12, church of the poison mind/karma chameleon, i've always loved that song 13, everything taboo, great chorus-anthem type thing those are my favorites, tho the whole album is just absolutely marvelous; will be one of the best in your library!
