Free Music Review: Charlie Parker on the guitar.

I first heard this recording at age 14 or 15. Until that time I had only heard Charlie Christian, but to hear bebop played on guitar was a revelation to me. I stopped piano & reeds & went out & got an electric guitar & cheap amp for about $75 total. Since that time I have replaced the LP with a CD, & still listen to it often. I listened to it so often that I wore out the LP. Before the age of CDs, I transferred it to tape cassette & now have the CD. Needless to say, I have acquired a lot of Tal Farlow CDs since that time. This offering was done with Vinnie Burke on bass & Eddie Costa on piano. Because there were no drums, Tal had to "kick" off his own playing. Note the intro to "You Stepped out of a Dream." My favorite is Bird's "Yardbird Suite" which I do with my own group. "Meteor" is also a treat. This guy Farlow, who I had occassion to meet in his home in N.J. about 20 years ago, had the largest hands I've ever seen.I studied under Chuck Wayne (guitarist with George Shearing) & also Herb Ellis who died this past March at 88 at the U. of North Texas. Anyway, if you want to know the real origins of bebop jazz guitar, get this CD. You'll be glad you did.
Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow Poster
Japanese reissue of the jazz guitarist's 1957 album. Verve. 2004.There were several fine jazz guitarists--Billy Bauer, Jimmy Raney, and Johnny Smith among them--who emerged in the late '40s and early '50s only to leave the spotlight within a few years. Tal Farlow, who died in 1998, stood out even among this gifted group, a brilliant musician who chose to spend much of his life working as a sign painter in North Carolina, playing locally and occasionally returning to the recording studios. On this 1956 session, Farlow led a trio with pianist Eddie Costa and bassist Vinnie Burke. The style of the group--without horns or drums--might be described as "chamber bop," relatively quiet music that swings mightily with complex and mutually supportive interaction, rhythmic verve and fluid invention. Farlow spins out stunning, seemingly effortless, lines of melody, both on bop tunes like Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite" and standards such as "Like Someone in Love." His overlapping exchanges with Costa--who possessed a Bud Powell-like fluency--are inspired. --Stuart Broomer
