Writer, producer, arranger and one awesome bass player. This is a truly great CD. You can just hear the touch Tal puts on the notes and you speakers will drip with talent.
Like a lot of other people I first took notice of Tal while watching the "Performing This Week...Live At Ronnie Scotts" Jeff Beck DVD. I then ran a couple of searches, read a bit more and ordered the disc. If you have ears that work it shouldn't take long to recognize this young ladies talent.
Some listeners may try to dismiss this as another fusion or light jazz recording but that's because they're not listening deep enough. Elements of Chick Corea, Weather Report, Steely Dan and several funky fusion bands are represented in her playing, think Stefan Lessard expanded, exponentially. You can understand why Jeff Beck would have her in the band as his "Wired" period can be heard occasionally in these songs.
I'm not going to break the record down song by song as each one is a jewel on its own. There's really not a weak spot on the disc. On my first couple listens I would think a part would start to drift towards being too light or an ending may have gone on a bit too long but after a few more spins it all just melts away.
The recording is top notch. The bass and drums have lot of nice, crisp punch and you can hear all of the instruments clearly and without strain. This is good because the band is worth hearing. They're very balanced and constantly compliment each other.
This is refreshing as it makes Tal seem as one who plays well with others. I would like to think that as much as her bass playing can demand to be front and center, recording with these musicians, touring with others and already being involved with some of music's royalty, she recognizes the importance of having and providing support. Hey, maybe she's the Steve Vai of bass players.
You just gotta listen to this must have disc for all who appreciate music. Tal has my best wishes and respect towards what I hope is a long career filled with all the accolades that a fine, intelligent and very talented musician deserves.
