Free Music Review: Things Changed...Talib Kweli Only Adapted

Now Im seeing this Album getting bashed because the beats are mainstream or are fillers. When Quality came out, It didn't have no 'A game' or 'work it out' beats to make it sound commercialized. That was 2002. Times changed. You can't expect people to come out with the same energy they had two years ago. yeah, 'Get by' was '02, 'I try' is '04. You must realize that music also evolved for better or for worse. now That I got that off my chest, let me get on to the review.
Going hard- This opening track had me excited When I frst put the cd in my cd player. The track shows why you have anticipated 'The Beautiful Struggle' in the first place. Talib's lyrics are well on point while the production goes hard(no pun intended). Wise to choose as the first song. his flow is on point while his lyrics helps his semi new voice. 5/5
Back up offa me- now, this song is more upbeat while the lyrics aren't as meaningful as Going hard. Still good though. The song shows Talib talking about the more annoying 'fans' on the Hi-Tek beat. This song may be what you call a commercial song, but its still good for what point he gets across. One of my favorite songs.5/5
Broken Glass- Random, I know. The neptunes with Talib Kweli? Suprisingly, a story track on a party beat. Funny, yes, but Talib Delivers, and thats all that matters. 4/5
We Know- A love track featuring Faith Evans. Now this song to me isn't all that, but thats probably just me. The beat is too bland for me to bump this song like the other songs. Talib and Faith are at their best, but the production is just too bland for me. Only song that I give a 3/5.
A game- Now, this is THE party track on the cd. More like B boys track than club track. This is what I was talking about when I said some of the songs sounds commercialized. A nice side of Talib I wouldn't have expected. Lyric's are above average while the production is upbeat. I like it. 4/5
I try- The first single. Some may go to say that its a Get by clone just because it is Produced by Kanye West and has a piano sample in it just like get by. They are two different songs. Mary j. Blige is on it and the track does not dissapoint. So far, Its my favorite song. 5/5
Around my way- A true gem. John Legend gives his voice on this more ballad type song. Talib talks about his neighborhood and what he believes in. Talib and John are at their best in this somewhat sorrowful track.5/5
We got the beat- Midi Mafia teams up with Talib and Res to form this Rock/Rap fusion. B boys track again. Not much to say about this track but to just listen to The creation of a new sound.4/5
Work it out- ...Wha? This is a track that confuses me. Its produced by Hi-Tek. Its sounds commercialized for Tek even, but its a good track still. The hook is very catchy. Very good for something I thought Talib wouldn't do in his career. 4/5
ghetto show- Talib and Common and Anthony Hamilton on a track!? You know this is gonna be a force to be reckoned with as soon as you hear it. Perfect in every way. Also, one of Talibs lines might be funny to you the first couple of times if ever heard ' Moment of Clarity' by Jay-Z.5/5
Black Girl Pain- A dedication to black women, or seems like it. Jean Grae is on the track...and blesses it. Midi Mafia Suprisingly produced it. A track not to be overlooked.5/5
Never Been In Love- Just Blaze and Talib Kweli really need to make more collaborations. Talib is expressing his feelings for his first love. An unexpected track that turned out unexpectedly good.5/5
Beautiful Struggle- "This is a tearjerker". A nice beat by Hi-Tek. Above average lyrics from Kweli. may be a sad track to some. Great outro for the cd.5/5
There you have it, The honest review for 'The Beautiful Struggle'. One of the top 5 best cds of '04. If you are a fan of Talib Kweli, Go out and get this NOW. if you just listen to it not expecting it to be the '04 'Reflection Eternal', you will be bumping this for the rest of the year. Also, Oct.12 comes out the new Mos Def, 'The New Danger'. Cop that too. You heard it. cop the beautiful struggle.

This version of "Beautiful Struggle" includes one exclusive bonus track that features Mos Def.Talib Kweli's sophomore solo album arrives with considerable fear that his mainstream aspirations may turn off longtime fans (ah, the curse of the conscious rapper). However, the album isn't as crassly commercial as some might complain. To be sure, The Beautiful Struggle could stand more consistency, and the album's production is a primary liability: songs like "A Game" and "Going Hard" weakly ape current fads while "Around My Way" inadvisably interpolates the Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic." That said, the balance of the album still holds up to scrutiny. Kweli might cut a party track ("We Got the Beat") and puff up his street cred ("Back Up Offa Me"), but much of The Beautiful Struggle articulates itself with emotion and intellect: "I Try," "Ghetto Snow," and "Black Girl Pain," for example. Like Kweli's debut Quality, this follow-up falls considerably short of classic status, but it still suggests some moves in a promising direction. --Oliver Wang
