Free Music Review: Before Its Time
Hit: 5 Stars

Talk Talk's final album was probably meticulously planned and structured - yet somehow it comes across as a spontaneous, flowing jam session. A highly eclectic work, it combines jazz, classical and blues influences, and even seems to anticipate future musical trends such as trip-hop, acid jazz and even industrial ambient. These diverse elements, however, are always used judiciously. Mark Hollis and his fellow musicians understand the importance of space within the music, and they build up layers and pare them back with remarkable subtlety. An album of focussed passion, with an emotional range sometimes bordering on the spiritual, it's a worthy companion piece to its predecessor 'Spirit of Eden'. Once pigeon-holed into the early 80's synth-pop genre, Talk Talk departed a decade or so later totally transformed. This album is proof positive.

Free Music Review: Unbelievable, Timeless
Hit: 5 Stars

I remember anxiously awaiting for this album to come out. I had been a big fan of Talk Talk since It's My Life. And then the Color of Spring changed everything. They made such a huge break from their original 80's sound that it was shocking and wonderful all at the same time.

And then came Spirit of Eden. There was nothing, absolutely nothing like it. A work of sheer genius. A masterpiece. The sound other-worldly and alien. But vital and gorgeous nonetheless.

I remember in college listening to Laughing Stock for the first time. Melancholy, plaintive and downright riveting. I was blown away. The drum work in particular was astounding -- persistent and unrelenting and angry.
Laughing Stock is not only an extension of the direction that Talk Talk took on Spirit of Eden, it a transcendent masterpiece in its own right.

Free Music Review: Nothing else like it.
Hit: 5 Stars

I am very fortunate that I happened upon this album in a used CD store....yes on the original label. I have listened to it three straight times through. I started reading other reviews and realized that I could not add much more to what has already been said about this amazing recording. I love Talk Talk's debut, Colour of Spring, and Spirit of Eden. This is a tour de force in a complete opposite direction......or maybe not. If you want to talk about the maturity of a band like the Beatles between their first album and Revolver; five short years, expect nothingless than to be blown away by Laughing Stock. This music is a sonic and lyrical blessing.

Dare: put it on and dont take it off, even when you want to. It is like taking a drive through as many landscapes/seascapes/earthscapes as possible in one hour. Unbelievable.

Free Music Review: A Timeless Work of Art
Hit: 5 Stars

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this album before. Actually picked it out of a seconds bin in 1993, based on nothing more than the cover. Took it home, listened on my 'phones, and entered a new world. As others here have noted, it is a mature and deep, compelling and timeless work of art. The powerful, feedback-heavy, minimalist guitar solo on "After the Flood" alone is worth the price of admission, somehow capturing the lyrical essence of a (post-) rock solo without the fancy finger work. Try to listen on the highest-quality sound equipment available. If you want to alter your consciousness a little before you fire it up, go ahead, but only a little. This is music that deserves respect and attention. I would hope that people are still listening to and appreciating it 20 or 30 years from now.

Free Music Review: What an ironic title
Hit: 5 Stars

Far cry from their synth pop heyday. This is a slow, dissonant, ambient, and tortured collection of songs. Some songs break into loud noise, others flow steadily, and others slither in tempo and are filled with animosity and sadness. Parts are symphonic noise symphony and those are the songs that I enjoyed the most because it allows the music to resonate. I like this period of Talk Talk's career better because I believe it has more deeply personal meaning. Their older synth-pop have their place, but their later stuff allows you to examine the bands quality of lyrics and musicianship better. I didn't think the lead singer was that good until I listened to this album. Regardless, don't buy this album for a good rollicking party.
