Free Music Notes for Laughing StockFree Music Review: I was there! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought a copy of this CD when it came out in 1991. I wish I had the money to buy a copy for everyone, because it seems as thought that would be the only way it could be heard by the numbers of listeners it deserves. I keep hoping some of the tunes would be added to a film's soundtrack or some similar vehicle to spawn interest. I have read much talk about the music and the vocals, but if you can decipher the hand written lyrics, that is even more of a bonus. I've listened to this CD countless times over the past 12 years (with added listening time for 'After The Flood'), and it always leaves me thirsty for more. Check out the cover illustration by James Marsh. Pure perfection.
Free Music Review: Laughing Stock Hit: 5 Stars
Brilliant. I regard this ablum as pure genius, an absolutely unparalleled work of musical amazment--it rolls like warm water over your body, comforts one moment like cool, linen sheets, then disturbs the next like spider webs in your face or something crawling in your ear...Also, the album flows seamlessly from one song to the other in such fluid, but dynamic continuity that I have a hard time regarding the ablum as a collection of songs, but rather consider it one brilliant piece of gorgeous, disturbing music. The album is an experience that stimulates all of my senses, too, I FEEL this album, I envision this music, I taste it, smell it...it is SO real! Simply amazing!
Free Music Review: "Laughing Stock" is no Laughing Matter Hit: 5 Stars
Like "Spirit of Eden" before it, "Laughing Stock" consolidates their move to art rock. However, "Laughing Stock" is more complex and dense than "Spirit of Eden" was. Both albums remind me of Peter Gabriel era Genesis, ELP, Pink Floyd, "The Dreaming" era Kate Bush, and "When the Eagle Flies" era Traffic. However, Talk Talk is far more about experimentation and being as uncommercial as possible. Nothing is on the surface and you have to go find it through repeated listenings which is very rewarding. "Laughing Stock" is an excellent swansong for Talk Talk. All art rock lovers should have it.
Free Music Review: Heartbreakingly Beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
So many effluent reviews and yet how can one touch the majesty that is this album? I've owned it since the day it was released and I still listen to it regularly. It envelops like a hug and comforts you with a sympathy and understanding that brings tears to my eyes. Evocative, haunting, and flat out gorgeous, I would certainly consider this as much a "desert island disc" as Miles Davis' "In a Silent Way", David Bowie's "Low", and Cocteau Twins "Victorialand". Words cannot describe it...just give it a listen.
Worth every penny if for nothing more than Mark Hollis' voice rising one note 6:14 into "New Grass". Just hits you like a train!
Free Music Review: "Built my bed...burn on Judgement Day..." Hit: 5 Stars
I got this album a year ago. Somehow, listening to this CD can feel like I've just bought it. The songs themselves seem to have something "hidden" that you think you'll pick up if you look for it. But there is always something more hidden...like, for example, "Taphead." The song starts out simple with a bass and a guitar riff and eventually muted trumpets and violins come in. Then, a loud, unexpected outburst of trumpets & violins, etc. happen. Was that expected from the beginning of the song? Who knows...the point is "little treasures" like that are waiting with Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock."
