Free Music Notes for Spirit of Eden

Free Music Review: Beautiful sonic journey from angst to peace - gimmickless.
Hit: 5 Stars

I picked a demo of this album up from a record store (an LP!!) in 1988, and was blown away. Lightyears from the keyboard-driven pop of their first few albums, this disc is a gorgeous drift through anger, reflection, hope and peace. Musically, it ranges from sparse to lush, with some abrupt transitions, and is constantly engaging. Not the disc to pop on to get pumped up, but one for reflection. Moving, beautiful, a must-have for those times when you're not in the mood for your usual choices. At times it soothes and at others you can almost feel Mark Hollis's frustration. New Age it AIN'T, but it's hard to classify - "mellow" is insufficient and misleading. It's challenging (though not in the manner that speedmetal or Zappa's Jazz From Hell is 'challenging'....) - it's a beautiful, richly evocative set of songs. "Spirit" in particular is superb. If your music collection is eclectic, you must hear this album.

Hit: 5 Stars

Spirit of Eden is perhaps one of the most beautiful pieces of music created in the past 20 years even though it has gone unnoticed by the record-buying public at large. Yet it still remains an "underground" masterpiece. As with most musical masterpieces, there are no dull moments here and even the silence in between tracks adds to the quiet power of this album. The six songs on Spirit of Eden capture Talk Talk at the height of their artistic powers. Recommended if you like Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Ros, or Rook by Shearwater.

Free Music Review: Wow...
Hit: 5 Stars

This can be challenging/demanding initially but just gets better and more rewarding with each listen. Adjectives? Calm, intense, brittle, mesmeric, pulsing, brooding, anguished, lingering. Full of sparse arrangements where each note drips with emotion, honesty and value...no sound on this album is wasted, and the detail just draws you in. Again and again. Apart from a sometimes raucous yet earthy electric guitar, most of the sounds feel organic - with bassoon, oboe, piano, trumpet, french horn, hammond organ, harmonica, violin, and clarinet alongside a wonderfully plain-sounding drumkit.

I don't agree with the 'ambient' tag - there's no synthesizers here, and it's too dynamic...it's closer to areas of jazz or classical. This is far from background music, and deserves full attention in a quiet place with no distractions - preferably late at night and in it's entirety. Beautiful.

Free Music Review: Exquisitie
Hit: 5 Stars

I was listening to a radio interview in San Diego and the DJ, Halloran, was talking with the guest about Talk Talk's "Spirit of Eden." Both were surprised that the other knew of this esoteric work. I had been a fan of Talk Talk's hits, but when Halloran mentioned that this was an inspiration for Radiohead's "OK Computer," I had to get it. The lyrics and melodies are painful and emotional, but not over-the-top. The songs are slow, but filled with intensity and move like honey through the ears; slow and delicious. The song "Desire" is a favorite. It starts off quiet, almost unsure and then explodes with drums midway. I would have loved to have seen this live. This is one of those albums you should own, whether you are a fan of Talk Talk or not. Any audiophile will be impressed to see it in your collection and would probably love to get it as a gift.

Free Music Review: I can't believe it
Hit: 5 Stars

A few years ago a co-worker and I were talking about music and he said "Talk Talk have an album called 'Spirit Of Eden', you should pick it up. You'll love it." TALK TALK! That British 80's pop band? "All you ever do is talk, talk"? Insanity! I didn't take his advice seriously for even one second. Luckily for me, he later brought the CD to work.

I'm at a loss for words to express the beauty of this music. Now I feel foolish for trying to write about it. When all else fails, make a comparison: I guess all I can say is that this somehow makes me feel similar to the way I do when I listen to Slint's "Spiderland" album or Two Dollar Guitar's "Train Songs".

I still can't believe this is the same Talk Talk.
