Free Music Notes for Stop Making Sense: Special New Edition (1984 Film)

Free Music Review: Great Improvement Over The Original Version
Hit: 5 Stars

It's true, to really appreciate this album, you have to see the film. And that's no chore. Stop Making Sense is probably the best concert film ever made. It's hard to imagine just listening to the album without thinking of Byrne's amazing stage presence (in or out of the big suit).

The Special Edition is the entire film soundtrack (minus some stage banter and the cut performances of "Cities" and "I Zimbra"). Their imagination made Talking Heads one of the greatest live bands of all time. The songs are mostly from SPEAKING IN TONGUES, but they also include interesting and in some cases superior versions of songs from all of their albums prior to 1983 with the help of the Tom Tom Club.

In addition to STOP MAKING SENSE, I recommend the newly released CD version of THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS. Listening to both would map eight years of live performances and barely short of 4 hours of live material.

Free Music Review: Fantastic album and now with more tracks!
Hit: 5 Stars

My favourite Talking Heads album is "True Stories", but this one comes up hot on its heels. Production is very good so the fact that the tracks are recorded live wholeheartedly adds to the enjoyment. Add to that intelligent lyrics, good beat, and you have an album to put on when you're in a good mood. "Burning Down The House" is the greatest track off the album in my opinion - turn it up real loud and the neighbours may just call the fire department :-) The other tracks are all lively and strong vocally and musically. This classic work deserves a place in your collection whether you like Talking Heads or not. Go and get it.

If you are new to Talking Heads then you should expect top class American rock and pop of the 80's. This is as good a place to start as any, but also check out "True Stories", and "Naked" for a more witty and humorous experience.

Free Music Review: Still Making Sense
Hit: 5 Stars

I remember the first time I heard Talking Heads' version of Take Me To The River. Thus began a long love affair with this band.

The newly remastered version of Stop Making Sense is an instant classic. From Byrne's entrance with a "boombox" and a guitar to the symphonic climax of the aforementioned dip in the water, the band is visibly in its prime. The picture is as clear and crisp as Byrne's larger than life suit in Girlfriend Is Better (I purchased the DVD too). The sound of each individual instrument and voice is just incredible. Tracks 5-9 are a seamless adventure through some of the band's best music. By far my favorite song on the whole cd is track 7, Life During Wartime. If you buy only one cd this whole year. . .buy this cd. It makes sense to say there will never, and I mean never be another band like this. . .and you can take that to the River!

Free Music Review: The version I was waiting for
Hit: 5 Stars

In 1984, I saw Jonathan Demme's "Stop Making Sense" four separate times--this was not unusual for any Talking Heads fan. So when the soundtrack was released, I rushed to get a copy. It's not hard to imagine my disappointment to find that it only contained nine songs from the film. Nine! Where were "Heaven", "This Must Be the Place" and the Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love"? This soundtrack was nothing less than a gyp!

Now, almost two decades later, is this new edition which contains so many of the tunes that I found unforgiveably left off the original! The sound is crisp and true. Without trying to overemphasize the importance of Talking Heads, this documentary of a truly great tour will reveal why this band had such a following, and why its music is still influencing the music of today.

Free Music Review: The Talking Heads best collection but not true to the movie.
Hit: 5 Stars

While this is ceratainly a fantastic album and probabely the Talking Heads best overall collection it is not the exact sound track as advertised. I own a VHS HIFI copy of the actual movie and have played it in the form of an audio cassette at least 100 times. The current new issue does not contain all the songs in the movie and several of the included tracks are not the ones in the movie. For instance, the hypnotic guitar solo during the introduction to Cross Eyed and Painless, perhaps the Talking Heads most energetic song, has been dramatically shortened from the version in the movie. Despite these frustrating shortcomings the newly released Stop Making Sense is far superior to the original release and should be considered an essential for any Talking Heads fan!
