Free Music Review: Articulate Collection
Hit: 5 Stars

Oddly, a compilation by Talking Heads should come out uneven and disjointed, but this collection is marvelously done. The songs meld well together and provide a sampler that wouldn't prevent anyone from buying their excellent original albums. ('Talking Heads '77,' 'Remain in Light,' and 'Speaking in Tongues' are their crowning achievements artistically, but 'Fear of Music,' 'More Songs About Buildings and Food,' and 'True Stories' demonstrate that they had a great repertoire. (Unlike, 'Sand in the Vaseline,' which is also excellent, but perhaps takes too many gems and doesn't align them as well.)

For the uninitiated, Talking Heads is one of the freshest and engaging progressive bands from the seventies and eighties. "Psycho Killer," "Once in a Lifetime," "Burning Down the House," and "Wild, Wild Life" all capture the inspired lunacy that dares to match the insanity of ordinary life. All of their albums are well represented. "Life During Wartime" represents them at their progressive best, but "And She Was" showcases their ethereal best.

In sum, 'Best of Talking Heads' provides a great mix and a thoughtful sampler without spoiling all of the fun.

Free Music Review: Excellent Heads Compilation
Hit: 5 Stars

Known as much for their quirky style as well as their enigmatic and creative music, Talking Heads were one of the most popular and successful bands of the late 1970s' and early 1980s'. Even today, almost 20 years after they broke up, they still have a large fanbase.

Personally speaking, I'm not the world's biggest Talking Heads fan. However, I've always liked what I heard from them, and I always wanted one of their cds in my collection. So when I found the single disc, 18 track collection "The Best Of Talking Heads", I snatched it up immediately.

This is by far the best collection for the Talking Heads novice. Pretty much all the Talking Heads essentials are here, including "Love - > Building On Fire", "Take Me To The River", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Once In A Lifetime" and "Burning Down The House" as well as many others. And every track sounds fantastic.

In addition, there is a wonderful booklet replete with great liner notes, including interviews with Talking Heads fans such as Moby and El P. It is also readily available and affordabe. I highly recommend it.

Free Music Review: Art meet punk
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a magnificent collection of this unique band's most popular songs. Sure there are omissions, but these tracks are representative of their most accessible music and almost every one is a classic.

The opener, Love Goes To Building On Fire is a powerful song with an unorthodox arrangement and evocative imagery, whilst Psycho Killer is a prime example of David Byrne's innovative vocal style.

The omission of The Big Country is a pity, but their version of Al Green's Take Me To The River from the same album remains fascinating. Another highlight is the cinematic Once In A Lifetime with its multi-layered rhythms and gripping vocals.

Burning Down The House, And She Was and Road To Nowhere were huge hits, the last being very much like a flowing country ballad. And that is what made Talking Heads so special - their brilliant explorations of a wide variety of styles. In the process they extended the musical boundaries of rock and made an innovative contribution to the music of the punk revolution.

Free Music Review: An extremely well-done introduction to the band
Hit: 5 Stars

The Best of Talking Heads is the latest in a (relatively short compared to other artists) line of "Greatest Hits" for the band. However, if you are someone who is looking for a single-disc package of the best songs from each of the band's albums, this is the CD for you. With an average of two songs from each album and a running time of over 75 minutes, it gives a very good overview of the band. The songs are very well picked given the limitations of the medium, and I don't think you can do much better when trying to turn a casual listener into a full-fledged fan. Sure, you can argue about the selections: "Houses in Motion" over "Born Under Punches"? No "I Zimbra"? But remember, this CD is for "new" listeners, and throwing songs like "Born Under Punches" in is like trying to teach calculus to a five-year-old. As for "I Zimbra", it pales in comparison to the other three selections from Fear of Music. Overall, this album is a great conversion tool to pop in while driving with a friend, which is exactly what it is for.

Free Music Review: Just what I wanted
Hit: 5 Stars

First let me say that while I enjoy the music of the Talking Heads, I am not a rabid fan. If I were, I'd probably say that "Greatest Hits" compilations are a poor substitute for owning every disc in their catalog. Since I am not, I can say that this particular compilation is the most comprehensive I've found, including all of their most popular tracks (and a few less popular ones). My 300-disc jukebox is full, with a "waiting list" of worthy entries. This particular disc replaced an existing TH album, "Stop Making Sense." I loved that album, but there were other TH tunes I also liked from other discs. I scoured Amazon's TH catalog for the one CD that included all of the tracks I enjoyed from SMS, as well as others, such as Road to Nowhere, And She Was, Once in a Lifetime, and Wild Wild Life.

So for all you purists out there, without the $$ or space for every TH disc, this is the next best thing. Even if you already own the entire catalog, this is the one you'll play most often.
