Free Music Review: Agood intro, better to have them all! Hit: 3 Stars
Most of the other reviewers have made good points so I'll try to be brief and not repeat. I was always a fair weather Talking Heads fan and finally got fully into them with the live "The Name of This Band..." release. I was overcome and had to go out and get their first four releases. I feel the best wat to explore this band is to start at the beginning and you can slowly trace their progress from an educated pop band all the way into their more produced rhythms and textures. I always remember a review from Rolling Stone about one of their shows at a festival when they suddenly appeared as an eight piece, or so, band. It may not seem like the same band if you just have one disc of the entire career. It seems jolting somewhat all the transitions they have gone through. I would strongly recommend progressing from :77, More Songs..., Fear of Music, Remain in Light, Speaking in Tongues, True Stories, Little Creatures, all the way to Naked. This way it's a natural progression and showcases the pure genius of their evolution. A good live presentation of this is the Jonathan Demme film "Stop Making Sense" which opens with Byrne alone on a baren stage and adds one musician per song up to their full strength. I saw this show three times. Once as part of their tour at the Greek, then as a rehearsal at the Long Beach Arena, and finally for the actual filming at the Pantages. Truly one of the greatest concert films ever and a true showing of their changes over the years.
Free Music Review: Only for the casual TH fan - many crucial songs missing?! Hit: 3 Stars
This is just another cash-in from WB on the Heads' back catalog - how can you call this "the best of" Talking Heads when it glaringly omits some of the BEST songs EVER, namely BORN UNDER PUNCHES and CROSSEYED AND PAINLESS from the bands' BEST album ever, REMAIN IN LIGHT? Sure these weren't pop-radio friendly hits, but they are essential to the scope/understanding of the Heads' signature sound, exploration, and growth! This is more like a singles collection - so if you need that, fine by me, but I won't be getting this. Nice cover, though.
Free Music Review: Incomplete Hit: 2 Stars
I know - you can't please everybody.
I'd like to buy a Talking Heads 'greatest hits' compilation because I do love a lot of their songs, but I don't particularly want to buy a 2CD or Box set just so I can have all of the songs I want. They've got a lot of songs that, frankly, I don't care for.
And this collection almost made me break out my credit card. But there are a few songs missing, and maybe someone thought they didn't constitute a "hit." "Radiohead" is one. Also, for die-hard fans, there were two versions of a fantastic "B" side song called "Hey Now." If you can find it, it's a real treasure, and I defy anyone not to get the simple chorus stuck in their head for the rest of the day.
Someone else accurately pointed out "Love For Sale" was also not on here. Great song, and video, but it's missing in action here. And you can't tell me that TH fans didn't love "Stay Up Late" from the "Little Creatures" album! I don't know if it was a hit, but it had a music video (remember they were all flying around on those harnesses wearing the white suits) and was (and still is) played a lot on the radio.
I'm sorry if the record industry is complaining about file sharing. But what choice do they give us when they constantly neglect to put together collections themselves which are complete? Give us what we want, then everybody will be happy - they'll get our money, and we'll get the exact product that we want. They have the capability to do that, but they won't, so the downloading will continue.
