Free Music Review: At last!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I first got this double-LP in 1982. I was 14. Saw Talking Heads for the first time that summer. I made a cassette copy of the album -- I listened to that tape on my Walkman until I wore it out. This has been one of my all-time favorite albums ever since. In 1988 I bought a CD player, and have regularly been checking to see if this album had been released on CD since that time. I had just about given up hope.

At last it's out, and with phenomenal sound and a whole slew of great bonus tracks. It's almost twice as long as the original release. We get to track Talking Heads' amazing progress from the lean 77-era band to the full "Remain in Light" band -- and I can't say which version is my favorite. The next album was "Speaking in Tongues" which was amazing but after that I think they became a bit less interesting. This album tracks the most exhilarating part of their journey.

My favorite Talking Heads album, and that's saying a lot.

Free Music Review: as good as live albums get
Hit: 5 Stars

It's great finally just to have the original tracks from this underappreciated live album on cd. TNOTBITH covers Talking Heads' first four studio albums, up to the point where MTV and Stop Making Sense raised them to a new level of popularity. The bonus tracks, which double the length of the set, are generally not quite as strong as the ones that were chosen for the lp, but they're still very good. Going back to this album 20 or so years I bought it on vinyl, I'm amazed at the raw energy of the Heads' early performances in particular. As good as their first two studio albums were, they seem tame compared to disc one of TNOTBITH. Some of the songs on disc two were obviously harder to adapt for live shows, but the arrangements are always interesting ("Born Under Punches" and "Psycho Killer" especially). On both discs, these performances are "live" in the best sense of the word -- alive, moving fast, coming right at you.

Free Music Review: If ...
Hit: 5 Stars

i could go back in time and was given the choice of a concert that i did attend , and throught the 70's and 80's i did attend more than a few having lived in San Francisco at the time ( otherwise my choice would be The Allman Brothers at The Fillmore East ) i would choose Talking Heads Remain in Light Tour over Dylan , The Dead , Genesis , Sex Pistols , The Pretenders , The Clash , Eric Clapton , Queen , AcDc , Peter Gabriel , Supertramp , B 52's , Bob Marley , Yes , Black Sabbath , Devo , Lou Reed , Bruce , Tom Petty , U2 , Neil Young , Rolling Stones , Steel Pulse , Elvis Costello , Blondie , Van Morrison , Prince , Kansas , ELO , etc ... etc .. Every time i hear that recording , my nervous system ignites in full rhytm , it was Un beliable ... so this Live recording does the same for me ... A MUST HAVE ...

Free Music Review: The Real Deal
Hit: 5 Stars

STOP MAKING SENSE is one of the alltime best concert films. Buy the DVD and enjoy it. When it comes to live albums, this one leaves the SMS soundtrack recording in the dust. THE NAME...was one of the all-time great live recordings when it was released in 1982, and now with the attached bonus tracks, is even better.

While the expanded 10 piece version of the band from the 80-81 tour is the main draw for me, I had forgotten what a potent live unit the original four piece from 77-79 was. Many of these versions eclipse already classic studio performances. HOUSES IN MOTION, THE GREAT CURVE, DRUGS (81 VERSION) and I'M NOT IN LOVE are light years ahead of the previous studio versions.

In case I'm being too subtle, do whatever it takes to aquire this treasure.

Free Music Review: thank god, my cassette was on its last legs...
Hit: 5 Stars

My cassette of this release was recorded off of the vinyl version of it, which itself had a skip during "psycho killer." i loved this album so much, though, i didn't care and even recorded the cassette to my computer and made a CDR out of it.

I just about peed my pants when I saw that Rhino was re-releasing this. The sound is great, the bonus tracks are amazing. Someone pointed out that "Crosseyed and Painless" is missing the keyboard intro -- I just listened to it and noticed it too. Oh well, the performances on this CD are good enough that I'm not going to drop my rating from 5 stars.

This is the only Talking Heads record you need. Ok, not really. You need "Fear of Music" too. But if you're in the record store and have to choose, get this one.
