Free Music Notes for True StoriesFree Music Review: Catchy tunes that stick in your head! Hit: 4 Stars
I haven't heard this recording in over two and a half years since mine burned in an apartment fire but I still remember lots of words. David Byrne also stars in a movie by the same title, True Stories, which features the music. I would highly recommend renting the video and picking up the CD. As good as any musical around...
Free Music Review: Also looking for the soundtrack, but this one's good Hit: 4 Stars
I completely agree with the person who's been looking for the True Stories soundtrack (AND I went to high school in Somerset!) -- this one may not be the very best Talking Heads but it's definitely happy music -- and also not bad for driving.
Free Music Review: Cool and funky, just what Talking Heads is best at Hit: 4 Stars
Not exactly their best, but no dissapointment...fun stuff, especially Wild Wild Life, Dream Operator, and City of Dreams. Nifty, catchy...Talking Heads. What else can I say?
Free Music Review: Soundtrack? Hit: 3 Stars
Actually...no. Some of these appeared in this form in the movie "True Stories", which is a wonderfully skewed look at Texas during its sesquicentennial (which, it should be noted, Texas didn't appreciate much). But while all of these songs here are the Heads's versions, there are some cases where the version on the film was _much_ better. Most notably, "Papa Legba", where Pops Staples turns in a spectacular, chilling, and deliciously bluesy performance on this voodoo-chant based track. But that's not here. As for the material, it's good pop...but for the most part, it's 'good pop', and not too much beyond that. The fire that came before just isn't here. My suggestion would be to, instead, get a copy of the movie and then you get the 'actual' performances of the songs here, as well as a lot of interesting missing music (by the likes of Meredith Monk, etc), plus the context in which all of this appears. "True Stories" is so much moreso David Byrne's vision at work, and what's here is better appreciated in its proper context.
Free Music Review: ACTUALLY 2 1/2! Hit: 3 Stars
I have to agree with Byrne. This and Little Creatures are the worst albums they released. If I had never heard any TH albums, I would think they are alright. But, TH are one of my favorite bands, and this album is not one of the reasons why. Anyone getting into them should initially purchase Popular Favorites. The best songs from their later albums are on there anyway. As far as individual albums go, the three Eno produced albums really are the best; and Stop Making Sense is a good live show to have.
