Free Music Review: Talent + creativity = MMMM

I saw the band perform live as an opener for The Zombies. Ordinarily, a crowd can grow restless waiting for a headliner, but the enthusiasm of young Tally Hall fans was matched by appreciative old-timers who heard a unique mix of pop, alt, ska, hip-hop, seriousness and folly. I picked up the album at the band's sale table, and haven't stopped playing it since.

Let's start with a technical review: there are actually 15 tracks, counting two hidden tracks (track #13 is entitled "13" and runs - you guessed it - 13 seconds long; track #15 is the Hawaiian-tinged "Hidden in the Sand").

I am a fan of music, rather than a critic. I enjoyed these songs because they have layered vocals a la Queen and The Beatles' "Because." This has led some reviewers to compare Tally Hall favorably to those two groups, which ordinarily would be the kiss of death, right?

Many of the songs are mini-rock operas, jammed with new hooks and licks that keep the songs moving forward, rather than just the normal verse chorus stuff. The song you hear in the first 20 seconds will be a totally different song one minute and three minutes in.

The fact that keyboardist Andrew Horowitz and guitarist Rob Cantor separately won John Lennon songwriting awards does not surprise me. The key now is for Tally Hall to capitalize on its successes and build for the future. Its new national record deal with Atlantic is a first step and should bring more national exposure.

Like so many bands of the sixties, Tally Hall has a gimmick: they wear white shirts and each member has his own color for his tie. Young fans call the members out by their color, but the music world would do well to familiarize itself with Horowitz, Cantor, Joe Hawley, Ross Federman, and Zubin Sedghi.

It is from this bizarre wonderland that Tally Hall draws the inspiration for their debut album, MARVIN S MARVELOUS MECHANICAL MUSEUM. The re-mixed and re-mastered album is a collection of songs that transcends stylistic parameters and genre conventions. In the same way Marvin s motley machines form an unexpectedly cohesive collection, riffy rock like Greener sits comfortably alongside the spare electro-hip-hop of Welcome to Tally Hall. The Caribbean flavors of Banana Man complement the rootsy Americana feel of Be Born.The Bidding and The Whole World and You sound like they're playing hooky from the Great White Way.Two Wuv voices a sly and slightly creepy attraction to the Olsen twins.
All five of us have different yet overlapping tastes in music says drummer Ross Federman. Having three distinct songwriters allows us to explore a wide-variety of musical terrain. Over time, it became apparent that our sound didn t fit squarely into a single genre. We just let the music speak for itself.
