Free Music Review: Princess of Motown

Let me start by saying that I am huge fan of Tammi Terrell. I only realized this months ago when I came across the "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" video with Tammi and Marvin. After seeing how cute, sexy, charismatic, and coy she was, I became a fan forever. I became really interested in her solo work and luckily I came across this wonderful compilation. The Essential Collection has become one of my favorite albums and it is constant rotation in my IPod. The CD is the classic Motown sound and Tammi's voice is smooth, shy, clear, and perfect. She doesn't belt like Gladys Knight or have range like Aretha, but her voice is the absolute perfect mix of calm, sexy confidence. If she hadn't died, she would have been next up to be one of Motown's biggest female stars.
I can personally listen to the CD all the way through, but there are some standout tunes. One of my personal favorites is "What a Good Man he is", in which Tammi raves about her strong, yet sensitive lover. I love this song. Its pretty funky, but has that gritty soul that Motown is known for. Tammi is sassy and sexy on this track. Another favorite of mine is "Two Can Have a Party". This is a song that was also recorded later with Marvin Gaye's vocals dubbed, but the solo version shines with Tammi's vivaciousness. The song is simply sweet and cute. I also like "Come on and See me" and "Hold me Oh My Darling". These tracks also had Marvin added later, but her solo version are just as entertaining as her timeless duets. "Can't Believe You Love Me" and "This Old Heart of Mine" are also really great tracks.
I could rave forever about these songs, but honestly all the songs are worth a listen. I do have a few critiques though: 1)I wish they would have included "All I Do" which was written for Tammi by Stevie Wonder and probably her best track ever. Look it up on youtube or purchase A Cellarful of Motown 2)They really should have included Tammi's solo version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", but you can't really complain about the duet with Marvin; its perfect. You can find her solo version on The Complete Duets 3)They should have included some of Tammi's earlier songs from her days with James Brown. Her song, "I Cried", is classic and you can find it on Itunes. Its amazing.
She was taken away from us too early and to think of the things she could have accomplished saddens me. I love Tammi. RIP Thomasina Winifred Montgomery.
