Free Music Review: Not to be taken for granted!
Hit: 5 Stars
Five stars all the way and for a number of reasons: Sonically, this is one of the most consistent TD albums ever! The sound here is bright, bold and hypnotic. The band uses (not abuses) impressive latest technology in this project. The compositions initially sound somewhat conservative, more in the style of 'Green Desert' and 'Rubycon', but this is deceptive. More careful listenings reveal that this is a CD from a different era... The musical structures develop and interlace in a subtle yet decisive manner, and the music gets progressively more complex, not, however, too complex, like in some later releases. And that is good, because, unlike those releases, this album retains its concept feeling throughout. The 20 min-long 'Mojave Plan' begins with an interesting 'eagle' sound, which sets the tone for a nocturnal trek, perfect for late-night meditation. This is a brilliant composition, which maintains the interest from the first to the last minute, that is, if you like pure electronic music. Because WE is totally electronic, and that's why some TD fans find it somewhat cold. Now, to be fair, TD does not really break any ground here. In fact, the previous release 'Exit', is generally considered more 'adventurous' than WE. And more dynamic. That does not necessarily mean, though, that 'Exit' is a better album. Personally, I like both CDs, but I give WE a slight preference. Both projects have, of course, similarities, since they come from the same era ('Convention of the 24', for instance, is like 'Remote Viewing's' brother). However, WE has also similarities with the earlier release 'Tangram'. It doesn't matter, anyway, because WE is still a unique and original project, mainly due to its mysterious and eerie feeling. The aforementioned 10-min long piece 'Convention of the 24', is truly and genuinely awesome. Ever-pulsating, mysterious, hypnotic and almost apocalyptic. The CD's highlight, alone worth buying the CD for. 'Midnight in Tula' the most dynamic and upbeat tune here, is great drive music and, thankfully, not long enough to distract. These three songs alone would make a great album, but there is more! The surprise of this CD, its closing 4 1/2 min. title track 'White Eagle', simply one of the very best short pieces TD ever created! A gem that leaves you wanting and a great way to close this excellent CD. The eerie feeling of this project is not to be found in most of the later releases, because afterwards, TD took their music to a different direction. This and the above reasons make this project even more precious. A must!
