Free Music Review: A Different Shade

Earlier this year i saw Taproot live, and i have to say they were pretty good live. I was never a huge Taproot fan, this being because of the lead singer's whiny vocals and they just seemed like another run of the mill nu-metal band. Then i heard they had recorded near 80 songs for their new record and their producer was scrutinizing everything to the very last string arrangement, and the new album was supposed to be their best work. I decided one day to pick it up just to see if it was a new piece i could enjoy listening to. Wow, what an album i came to find out, i had made a very good decision in picking this up. People who don't like past work from Taproot, don't use that as an excuse to not pick this up. It is great, and at times sounds almost 100% different than Taproot.
1.I Will Not Fall For You 10/10...One of my favorites and a tremendous heavy opener. Stephen's screams are colossal in this song. If one had to find a flaw in this album, it would be that it's not as heavy as past work but it still has it's heavy parts.
2.Violent Seas 9/10...This song was produced by Billy Corgan and i can see how. It's a very unusual song and was my initial favorite on the cd. Very good song.
3.Birthday 10/10...My favorite overall. Very melodic, and slowly but surely picks up and finishes heavy. Plus, the chorus is just amazing.
4.Facepeeler 9.5/10...Great song. After a long beginning of soft guitar strumming, the song explodes and is very heavy throughout.
5.Calling 9/10...The first hit off the album, and is a very good song. A little darker, but it is along the likes of Birthday.
6.Forever Endeavor 8.5/10...This is where one can see the album start to go a little downhill, but not too bad. This song is very good, but it starts sounding repetitive, but i love the chorus.
7.April Suits 8.5/10...A very unusual song. Starts off with some humming like a build up and is very bouncy and catchy. Also has heavy parts, good song.
8.Lost In The Woods 8/10...A fan favorite, and it's pretty good. Another slower song, but Stephen's vocals tend to annoy me at some points, but other than that good song.
9.So Eager 8.5/10...After a Korn-esque opening you would think that this song is going to be very heavy, but it then slows down. But that doesn't make it bad, Stephen's vocals are great in this one, and this picks the cd back up.
10.She 9/10...This song features a very cool beginning with guitars hitting hard and then stop for softer touches. Has a pretty good chorus and for some reason i really like the lyrics. Obviously about a greedy woman.
11.Promise 8.5/10...The last slower song. Kind of reminds me of a faster Lost In The Woods, and this song is pretty good. Does't do too much for me. The verses are great, but the chorus hurts it a little bit.
12.Nightmare 8/10...Whoa. Such a weird beginning, with some type of unusual instrument and then hits hard. This song is pretty dark, but Stephen's vocals are off beat the whole song, and while this is a nice change of pace, this song is only decent. The best part is the pre-chorus.
13.Blue Sky Research 9.5/10...Much like Facepeeler's beginning with very soft guitar strumming. But this one is even softer and longer and this one really fools the listener and makes you think the song is going to be extremely soft, but instead it's extremely heavy. Very good song, and a pretty fitting ending. The only thing that prevents it from perfection is how many times the chorus is played.
Overall don't be afraid to pursue them, they are a good band. Old Taproot fans shouldn't fret either, because change is good, and this album is very good.
