Free Music Notes for My Winter StormFree Music Review: Very impressed... Hit: 5 StarsWhat an amazing album! One of the best from this year from what I've heard. I'm not too fond of the cover of "Poison", it may have been better suited for a single track, but oh well. Overall though, these songs blow me away with their depth and power. If you're looking for fast-paced stuff, you'll have to pass on this one, but if you always liked the softer or more mellow Nightwish songs, where Tarja's voice and beautiful music compliment each other, then you will love this album. Furthermore, The track "Oasis", which Tarja composed herself, is stunning and brilliant, and it's one of the best songs I've heard in a long time. Five stars. Congratulations, Tarja, and best of luck to you.
Free Music Review: Worth it Hit: 4 StarsSo none of us will ever forgive Tarja for ignoring Nightwish... that said, this is an awesome CD well worth the money. It has the ornate (only word for it) vocals of the Nightwish work but without some of the more aggressive instrumentals. Given the history, the lyrics are hilarious (I Walk Alone... yeah, real subtle :P ) but it's still loads of fun.
Free Music Review: Quite boring... Hit: 2 StarsAlas, Tarja, you've lost me. You have one of the most beautiful voices in the world, an enchanting visage, and certainly exposure to all kinds of music...and you give us this.
My Winter Storm is not a bad album. Actually, I have no problem listening to it -- as background music. There is nothing at all that stands out about this album, save Tarja's voice, and while it's very pretty...it's not enough. I knew after the first spin I wouldn't be adding this CD to my shelf of favorites, and that opinion hasn't changed several weeks later.
To be frank, it's boring. Whoever said it sounds like Nightwish is out of his mind, unless he simply equates Nightwish with her voice. NW's music was and is dynamic, exciting, and interesting. There is nothing interesting about the majority of the songs on this album. I've listened to it several times, and this is what I came away with:
"I Walk Alone" - accessible enough. I do like this song, and I think it would be better-served without the guitars.
"Lost Northern Star" - freakish vocal lines. It's the only song I'd really classify as requiring multiple listens.
"Poison" - good until it falls apart after the second chorus. It is also the only song on the album that seems to showcase any energy.
The standout gem is "Oasis," which I believe was composed by Tarja alone. If that's the case, she really needs to get rid of her multiple songwriters and see what she can do with more material -- I quite like "Oasis" -- it's both mystic and peaceful.
I can't remember much about the other songs. I think one of them was about a boy wanting a toy.
So, if you love the lady's voice (or are one of her rabid fans) you'll probably love this album. Tarja does indeed sound magnificent on it. But as her split with Nightwish confirmed -- at least for me -- it's not all about the voice. You've got to have something good in the music, too.
Free Music Review: Disappointing Hit: 2 Stars
2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, December 10, 2007

It has become painfully obvious Tarja is, by all means, not a composer and that those chartered to compose "My Winter Storm" with her are not of admirable caliber either.
Tarja's voice is beautiful as ever, but she does not challenge herself in the least and neither do the songs, and this is a greatly missed chance. Many of her melodic lines are 13 in a dozen, the lyrics are often blunt and straightforward without much sense for the poetic, mystical and metaphorical. The music itself is even rather generic and not of great interest. In my opinion, there's a lot of 'easy scoring' in many of the songs and as a result I did not finish listening to this album and probably never will.
If you were a fan of Tarja specifically, you will most likely still enjoy this album greatly, if you were a fan of Nightwish, and their musical power, especially in their layered composing and lyrics, this is not the album for you.
Free Music Review: My winter storm Hit: 4 StarsEveryone who is familiar with the heavy metal band Nightwish, last year the band had an acrimonious split with their former lead singer Tarja Turunen. It came to a shock for every fan of the band as well as Tarja. After a year since her dismissal fromt he band, Tarja returns to the music scene with a new album. MY WINTER STORM is Tarja's second solo album. The album is a concept album, split into three parts: ITE MISSA EST, THE ESCAPE OF THE DOLL, and SUNSET, complete with eighteen tracks.
I have to admit I have enjoy the new Nightwish album and their new singer Anette but alas I had missed hearing Tarja's operatic vocals. Thankfully I recently got a hold of her new solo album. Initially MY WINTER STORM did not impress me that much. Some of the songs left a flat taste in my mouth. Now that I am listening to the album again, the songs are starting to grow on me.
Tarja sounds as good as she ever did when she was with Nightwish. Her classically trained vocals takes a front seat on the album. I have noticed that there is a distinct classical sound. There still is a hard rock edge but it is more subtle and it takes a back seat to Tarja's classical roots.
I'm not really sure what to make of Tarja's cover of the Alice Cooper song "Poison". It is an interesting cover to say the very least. I wouldn't say that the song is all that hot but I don't think it is terrible either. I am more of a fan of songs like "I Walk Alone", "The Reign", and "Oasis".
At the moment MY WINTER STORM is only available as an import. An official US release won't happen until early 2008. For people have missed Tarja Turunen, MY WINTER STORM is certainly worth checking out.
