Free Music Review: Defies all expectations
Hit: 4 Stars

I really didn't know what to expect -- I didn't remember it getting especially great reviews when it came out -- but I'm really glad I took a chnace on this record.
This is one of those "lost" albums, like Unified Theory's debut, that failed to catch an audience. More than likely you'll find it in a pawn shop (as I did ... for both of them, as a matter of fact), but DO NOT let that dissuade you.
This is exceptional rock 'n' roll. PERFECT for long summer nights spent around a campfire with close friends. (And preferably in the northern woods of Minnesota or Wisconsin.*)
It's nonconfrontational rock, so it's great for carrying on one of those deep conversations. Best of all, it has the ability to suck everyone in because, as it's a tribute to classic rock or whatnot, it's always vaguely familiar -- even if it's your first spin.
Take a chance on this one. At least give "Louise" a shot, because you'll surely be hooked after you hear that one.

*Trust me. Everything sounds better up here.

Free Music Review: Breezy, retro-rock fun
Hit: 3 Stars

This solo project from Foo Fighters' drummer Taylor Hawkins is a fun album full of many delights, particularly for fans of 70's-era rock and roll. Taylor wears his many influences on his sleeve throughout the production, leading the listener on a fast-paced ride through classic sounds reminiscent of many of his own musical heroes and inspirations. "Running in Place", a complex piece with multiple sections (and time signatures), easily recalls the work of early Genesis and Yes. "You Drive Me Insane" features drum riffs straight out of Stewart Copeland's bag of tricks, and "It's OK Now" is an insanely hooky piece that would have been at home on any Eagles album. Even the last track, "Better You Than Me", seems to recall Wall-era Pink Floyd.

That's not to say the album is all derivative. Despite all the obvious influences the music still sounds fresh and exciting. Not every track is a winner, but Taylor shows a great deal of promise as a songwriter as well as a drummer--though here he certainly showcases his skills on the kit like I've never heard him before.

I definitely recommend this album to drumming enthusiasts and Foo-fans everywhere.

Free Music Review: Taylor Hawkins
Hit: 3 Stars

Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders debut not only features a great name, but good music as well. Now this album is not quite as good as the Foo Fighters stuff, but nonetheless, it is surprisingly good.

TH&CR has more of a retro-rocker feel to it. More of a rockin' 1970's vibe to it. At times a classic Southern rock feel. But you can definitely hear the Foo Fighters influences in there too. And Taylor is actually a good lead singer - who knew?

All in all, it's a good CD, but, it's not receiving much attention since it's not all that special/memorable. It's good, not great - 3 stars.

Free Music Review: Okay, but not great
Hit: 3 Stars

Bought this as a die-hard Foo Fighters fan to see what Taylor Hawkins could do. Overall it's a solid album, but don't buy it expecting a Foo Fighters type album. It's very mellow and melodic and has a 70's rock feel to it. It's a very quality album though and has a few great songs on it.

Free Music Review: Something Missing.....
Hit: 2 Stars

To keep this short and simple, the reason this recording got 2 stars (and not 3 or even 4) is because taylor hawkins has a long long way to go in finding his voice (like his counterpart, Grohl, I'm sure he will over time). The whisper-y, monotoned, near emotionless singing really takes a toll on the listener. The music is above average although I waited the entire cd for the guitar and drums to break open (they never did). They say this is classic rock, but its not. Classic rock finds a way to let loose and really take ahold, something these musicians never do. It felt as if the music was restrained, even held back. Nothing new or exciting was ever brought to the fore front. Very timid throughout. A few touch ups and reworking of the songs, more freedom for the musicians, some excitement and feeling from hawkins, and a good guitar solo would have put this cd over the top. Its too bad. Hawkins' drumming (his obvious natural talent) is awesome though.
