Free Music Notes for Taylor Hicks

Free Music Review: Very Impressive!
Hit: 5 Stars

I listened to the cd 3 times yesterday, had chosen a favorite, listened again, chose a different favorite, then yet another.

Wherever I Lay My Hat is the best song on the cd. Even though the song is about a man leaving a woman, Taylor sounds like his heart is breaking yet he is living the life he needs to live. It is soulful, has beautiful vocals and moved me to tears. Simply stunning.

The Right Place, written by Bryan Adams for Ray Charles, has the sound of an instant classic. It has the feel of Ray Charles and Randy Newman, a bluesy, gospel feel that warms the soul.

Just To Feel That Way shows off Taylor's beautiful vocals and should be a big hit on the adult contemporary list.

The Runaround is the song many people will have most likely heard now during Taylor's promo tv performances. If you can sit still to this upbeat, motown groove song, you have absolutely no rythym whatsoever.

The Deal and Soul Thing are songs penned by Taylor and have a nice blusey feel to them.

Taylor has the versatility in this cd to make me smile like a drunken monkey and dance barefoot across my kitchen floor one moment with songs like Runaround, and leave me weeping like a motherless child after listening to Wherever I Lay My Hat.

Kudos to Taylor for giving us an outstanding first offering and I truly believe this young man is destined to become a first class entertainer for a very long time.

Free Music Review: Great Debut Album!
Hit: 5 Stars

It's unbelievable to me how people who are fans of the other contestants on AI bash Hicks in these reviews. This isn't a competition anymore, and there is plenty of room for multiple contestants to release albums and hopefully succeed. I am a big Taylor fan, but wish the other idols luck with their endeavors. And so should we all, instead of the bashing.

In my 30's, there has not been a lot of current music that appeals to me. A lot of music just hasn't been "good" lately. The more I listened to Taylor Hicks on AI last year, the more I hoped he would win so we could hear an album of good music.

Yes, the lyrics on this debut CD are simple, but this is probably due to the quick production. But the music on this album is just that: music. It's catchy, easy to listen to, and played with actual instruments.

How many times have you looked forward to a release by an old favorite, bought it, put it in and there are only 2-3 good songs?! This is simply not the case here for me. This is the first time in a long time that I have bought an album where I enjoyed a majority of the tracks. Personal favorites are The Maze and Feel That Way.

He has delivered a gem here...music that you can really listen to. I hope enough people embrace this solid debut album (commerical debut!) to drive Taylor to a long and successful career.

Free Music Review: Wonderful Album--Deserved Success
Hit: 5 Stars

I may be the only Hicks fan whose favorite on this album is Dream Myself Awake. Could be because I saw him perform it on TV as well as heard it and he is a superb perfomer. But I enjoyed just listening to it, thought the lyrics with their play on words were particularly good. There is not a song on this CD I won't listen to again and again. There are songs that move me and others that make me want to dance--a great mix. And Taylor's voice, with its unique expressiveness, is what makes this album. Let me repeat, his voice makes this. We saw what he could do with almost any song on Idol.

You know there is not a participant from season 5 who has made an album who I don't think is greatly talented. Personally I would rank Chris especially high. And to see him and Mr. Hicks as competitors when the show is over is kind of silly--there is room for more than one successful and talented artist in the world. It comes down to taste--I just like Taylor better than the others. Giving a hint of my age--I always liked Bob Dylan better than Elvis but Elvis was superb. It's a little sad that talented young people have to market their work through a competitive contest--Chris and Taylor are not trying to sing the same songs in the same way so to say one is better than the other is a bit lame. But that's off the subject, right?

To sum up, this is wonderful. Buy it.

Free Music Review: Taylor Makes the Best Album Relased by Anyone in Years
Hit: 5 Stars

The heck with the naysayers who say this album isn't this or that. The fact is this album is all that! It's a pure album made in the vein of the albums of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. This album has a variety of songs and styles in the vein of Elvis Presley. Elvis was at any given time the King of Rock, the King of Ballads, the King of Love, the King of Country, and the King of R&B, as well as the King of Christmas and the King of Gospel. This album has great replay value and the songs will no doubt tranfer well to the live stage.

Elvis' Sun songs are among this best in part to their rawness. The same can be said of pre-Idol Taylor. But Elvis moved on to RCA and made more produced records and they are classics. Taylor's move to a real record label is the same. Taylor is in the big time now. Under the Radar was great for what it was but would be considered amateurish if released by a big name label. The same is true of Elvis' Sun singles.

In short, this is a funky album and a solid first release. And Taylor will make the songs the best live numbers in years.

A great artist makes music for himself and for the feel - commerical success be d-mned. Taylor has done just that. Rock on, Taylor. We love you! Taylor sings that he's "Gonna Move," and with this album so are the rest of us.

Free Music Review: Just what I expected from Taylor - and more!
Hit: 5 Stars

Where do I begin to recap this glorious album? Not to be sappy or anything, but there are parts of this CD that just make me smile - and there are others that make me literally get up and dance, and very few artists do that to me! From the first play-through, the songs that got my attention were "Gonna Move," "The Maze," "The Right Place" and of course two of his very own from his earlier CD: "Soul Thing" and "The Deal."

Later, I warmed up to "Runaround," "Heaven Knows," and "Just to Feel that Way." I do feel that the only weak track is "Places I've Been." Just doesn't do a thing for me.

But I've saved a whole paragraph for the song that *does* do something for me! Wow! What can I say about "Give Me Tonight" except SEXY! It makes you want to go out and do - - something. You fill in the blank. As a married woman, grabbing my husband will do.

Great CD. Taylor Hicks will be a household word for many years to come.

P.S. Upon review, I noticed that the name given to this review is my 18-year-old's son's name ("Madness") because we have sort of shared this account. (He's ordered some stuff with my permission.) I don't want want anyone confusing me with "Madness." I'm the one with the husband. Madness is the teenager.
