Free Music Notes for Taylor HicksFree Music Review: Taylor Hicks ROCKS!!! (The CD doesn't) Hit: 5 Stars
In my opinion, while Taylor's voice is clearly amazing, the CD isn't.
When America chose Taylor Hicks as their next American Idol, they didn't only choose him, they also chose the soul/blues/funk style as their musical genre of choice. Unfortunately, what America got instead was the result of today's cookie-cutter pop industry applying "pop treatments" to a blues/soul/funk album. (The cookie cutter killed the radio star!)
While there ARE some radio-worthy tunes, most of the CD sounds like an amazing vocalist singing over a group of studio musicians who were hired to only play chords by the numbers.
In my experience, blues/soul/funk singers sing rhythmically as PART of a great band, not OVER a generic band ...hence the tight and slick charm of that style of music. This means that, on the bright side, once he goes on tour with a band he gels with the concerts will be AWESOME!!!
In my opinion, if you want to hear a better Taylor Hicks CD then buy the album he made prior to the whole American Idol fiasco. I am sure his next CD will be much better.
My 5-star rating is for Taylor Hicks and not the CD.
Free Music Review: THERE ISN'T A BAD SONG ON THIS CD Hit: 5 Stars
Being a idols fan I've written reviews on several cds. This is Taylors first release since winning AI. One of the best things about this cd is the balance between uptempo songs and ballads. Taylor wasn't going to do a cd until january because he felt he might not have enough time. He has songs written by Rob Thomas, Dianne Warren, Bryan Adams, and ray charles. If you like real music, music that isn't hip hop or electric this is the cd for you. Alot of up beat songs like the Run Around and Give me tonight, and he has ballads like the right thing and Just to feel that way. THE CD IS ONE OF THE BEST OF THE YEAR, Taylor has great songs, a great band, and he is great as far as vocals. He spent 18 hr days trying to get the best cd that he could come out with and IT'S HERE. Taylor If you don't know the story waited 10 yrs for a shot at the big time and he was not going to put out anything but a great product.IF YOU LIKE GOOD MUSIC BUY IT AND IF YOU DIDN'T LIKE TAYLOR ON AI YOUR IN FOR A SURPRISE BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE HAVE SAID I DIDN'T LIKE ATAYLOR ON AI, BUT I LOVE THIS CD. THIS IS A FIVE STAR CD AND COULD BE RECORD OF THE YEAR.
Free Music Review: Grows On You Hit: 5 Stars
Unlike typical pop stars, Hicks has taken a different route for his first major-label release. These songs are not "grabbers"; they don't hook the listener immediately, like, say, those on "Some Hearts" (Carrie Underwood) or "Breakaway" (Kelly Clarkson). Instead, these tunes underwhelm on first listen. But there's more substance, too, and, after repeated listening, Hicks's tunes stay with you. Take "The Runaround," the album-opener. It seems like an overly produced plodder -- until the third time you hear it, when you realize that it snaps and pops, with horns that parry and jab. You can't get it out of your head. Same with such songs as "Heaven Knows" and "Gonna Move." The ballads, like "Places I've Been" and "Just To Feel That Way," are particularly effective, partly because they're against type; Hicks may be a belter, but he can tone things down effectively and sing with great feeling. The more you listen to this album, the more it embeds itself in you. This album is underrated because it doesn't "take" on first hearing. It takes time to appreciate just how good it is.
Free Music Review: Exceeded my expectations Hit: 5 Stars
I figured that Taylor would have to do a lot of compromising so I wasn't expecting a great cd, but I was surprised in a good way that this cd is fantastic. I love every song, except for Give Me Tonight, which I strongly dislike because of the woman singing louder than Taylor, it's very jarring and wrong. Can you imagine Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Sting, etc. being upstaged by a backup singer on their own cd? I can't imagine why the producer arranged the song that way. Taylor is not disco, thank you very much.
But the other songs are simply amazing. Runaround isn't my favorite but has grown on me. The other songs are achingly passionate, good lyrics, and Taylor's voice is awesome. His phrasing and styling of the songs is superb. There's no way I could pick a favorite at this point as I love so many of them. I think this cd is going to win Taylor a lot of respect as an artist with integrity and talent. I can't wait to see him on tour and I find myself playing this cd over and over.
Free Music Review: Really really good :-) Hit: 5 Stars
With a soulful voice that is amazing, there are also some fantastic songs on this cd. It's great and a definate must buy for yourself and family and friends for the holidays.
I think he has a fresh sound that has wide appeal and he's very talented. He does a brilliant version of the Paul Young song, Wherever I Lay My Hat, and there is Just To Feel That Way and Dream Myself Awake that I also really love. His husky and soulful voice are really a winning combination and I think he has the potential to become one of the most successful AI winners other than Kelly because he's got such a unique sound to all the others. One noticable difference here than the other winners, is that his standout song Do I Make You Proud is not on here whereas previous winners have included their 'winning' song as part of their cd.
Overall, I love this and think you will too if you like a little bit of a rock sound mixed with power vocals behind it and I am enjoying listening to this in the car now over and over. This is great.
