Free Music Notes for Fearless

Free Music Review: Definition of a complete package...
Hit: 5 Stars

Trying to keep my mind off some current events I decided to immerse myself in the world of pop-country (go figure) and since I am absolutely obsessed with Swift's triumphant `Love Story' I decided that her album `Fearless' was next on my list. I wasn't really expecting too much from this album; a few scattered songs of interest corrupted by endless ballads and corny `teeny-bop' tracks maybe. Instead I actually got one of the better albums I've heard recently and quite frankly one of my personal favorite daily distractions.

Not a single track is bad; seriously.

Like I do with most my `music' reviews, I'm going to dive into this one from my personal favorite track down to my least favorite.

First of all, the best track here is not `Love Song', even if I absolutely adore that track with every fiber of my being (for those of you interested, I finally caved in and actually chose a Taylor Swift song for my ringtone but it wasn't `Love Story'; it was this one). The best track on `Fearless' is the closing track, `Change', an inspirational up-tempo ballad that sends shivers down my spine beings that it touches upon the very hopeful thinking I find myself in lately. I NEEDED this song, and so when I heard it I instantly became invested. There's a line in the song where she says that `there is something in your eyes says we can beat this' and that sticks out to me as so relevant. I just cannot hear this song enough.

Hallelujah.

`White Horse' and `You're Not Sorry' and both beautifully constructed tracks; both soft and delicate and sincere. `White Horse' is probably my second favorite track on the album, for it showcases Swift's vocals beautifully. Taylor does not have the best voice in the industry. She cannot hit the notes that Carrie Underwood or Martina McBride can, but she has a gift for penning her own songs and delivering relevant teenage drama in a nicely constructed package. While her vocals may not be spellbinding; there is not a track on the album that is not engaging. `You're Not Sorry' would have worked better with an Underwood vocal finish (just think Carrie's work on `I Know You' and you'll know what I mean) but Swift is capable of delivering us a youthful yet mature rendition of love lost.

I'll take a bow in `Love Story's direction now...impeccably done; fun, spunky, endearing.

`Tell Me Why' and `The Way I Loved You' are up-tempo gems here; real country feel complete with catchy chorus lines and singable lyrics. I particularly LOVE the feel of `Tell Me Why' even if I personally prefer `The Way I Loved You'. Both tracks are a total joy to listen to; fun and fresh.

I am a huge fan of Colbie Caillat (such a talented singer/songwriter) and so `Breathe' is a total winner for me. I personally wish that Colbie had more to do than just sing background vocals, since her vocal styling is so genuine and pure to me, but you can feel her presence on the entire song. Even the musical arrangement sounds like a Colbie track as apposed to a Swift song.

`Fearless', `Hey Stephen', `You Belong With Me' and `Forever & Always' are all nicely done and easy to listen to. I personally adore `Hey Stephen', and `You Belong With Me' is already tearing up the radio stations as we speak. It's easy to see why. The song is fun and catchy and relevant. Sure, it can be labeled clichéd, but it is smartly written and spearheaded right at the right audience. `Fearless', the albums open, sounds like a slower paced version of `Change' (listen to the musical arrangements of both and tell me you don't see a similarity), and I personally like that decision. It makes the album feel full circle.

`Fifteen' and `The Best Day' are conceptually better than they are in construction. They are very personal tracks, and I totally love that about them, but in respect to the other songs on the album they lack the `pop' the others have. I like them (I think I prefer `Fifteen', although `The Best Day' actually brought me to tears the first time I heard it) but they are my least favorites on the album.

That said, the album is a very complete package. Even those two tracks I'm less enthusiastic about are well worth listening to and don't warrant a skip by any means. Taylor is young but she is smart, and she knows how to write songs that appeal to her audience. Any teenager can relate to the issues mentioned here, and even some of us non-teenagers can appreciate the maturity with which she attacks some of these subjects. I'm pleasantly surprised with this album and recommend it with absolutely NO reservations!

Fearless Poster

Fearless is the 2008 sophomore album from Taylor Swift, the young Country singer/songwriter who charmed the hearts and charts of America beginning with her debut single 'Tim McGraw'. Her triple-platinum self-titled debut release has scanned over 3.4 million units and spent more weeks at #1 than any other Country album this year: 24 weeks! Taylor is the only Country female artist to have five Top 10 singles from a debut album and the only Country female vocalist this decade to reach the Top 5 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart. Needless to say, she's a sensation that has only just begun to show what she is capable of. 13 tracks including the single 'Love Story' and 'Change', first heard during the 2008 Summer Olympics. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
