Free Music Notes for Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture Op. 49; Slavonic March Op. 31 AlbumFree Music Review: Saved by the 1812 Overture Hit: 3 StarsI've been searching for a good rendition of Francesca Da Rimini and one reviewer had commented that this version conducted by Carlo Maria Guilini was THE ONE that set the highest marks for all others to follow. If that's true, then I think it was surpassed a long time ago by Karajan. It's not terrible but the problem I have with it is the same thing I have with all the pieces on this CD with the exception of the 1812 Overture; they are uneven. In places they are overly rushed and sped up, then other parts are too slow. It's noticeably annoying. Especially the Romeo and Juliet. At one point (almost out of the blue) I thought Markevitch was swatting at a fly and the symphony was desperately trying to keep up with him. This is one of the greatest love stories ever written. Where is the deep emotion Tchaikovsky poured into the sheet music to demonstrate that?!!
It's one saving grace is the 1812 Overture. Slatkin carries the tempo well and builds it up to a shattering climax with flare of trumpets and brass. It may not be the best but it is played with conviction.
I don't care what anyone says, Tchaikovsky was a romantic and his music needs to be played with sensitivity. Both joy and despair need to be felt or you have failed to perform the music as it was meant to be played.
