Free Music Notes for Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture:The New RecordingFree Music Review: A Sonic Showcase Hit: 4 Stars
Telarc has been known for recordings of superior quality since their beginnings. This is a follow-up of a previous, more traditional rendering of Tchaikowsky's greatest showpiece. This time, though, the addition of a choir singing the opening hymn, and the children's chorus later in the work, add to the emotion of this fine recording. My only fault is that the cannons seem somewhat muted, when compared to the previous recording. Telarc has been on the cutting edge of recording technology and, as a result, has recorded this performance with Sony's new DSD technology. The sound is spectacular, aside from the muffled cannons. I've listened to this recording on both the DVD-Audio and SACD versions, and clearly feel the DVD-Audio offers more value and full backward compatibility with DVD-video players by providing DTS as well. While the SACD is a hybrid disc, that is, compatible with standard CD players as well as SACD machines, the surround sound is available only on SACD players. Sadly, Telarc has opted to throw full support behind an inferior format and plans to release no more DVD-Audio discs unless they have to.
Free Music Review: I would give it 4.5 stars, actually Hit: 4 Stars
The amount of good Tchaikovsky music on this album is rewarding. The addition of vocals to the 1812 overture is breath taking. (The other versions I have sound funny to me, already). While some people have said that the cannon sound muffled and weak, I think they must be listening to the DTS/Stereo track instead of the DVD Audio track. The cannon actually sound like cannon. What's more, they circle you. I have been to Civil War reenactments, and a Navy Band performance of 1812. I know what a cannon sounds like. Most other versions of the 1812 overture are accompanied by explosions, not cannon. These are quite life-like. My only complaint is that they don't resonate. The sound is there, but I don't get the sense of the air displacement like a live cannon would. (That might be where the 'muffled' description comes from.) Oh, and March Slav will raise the hair on the back of your neck. It is amazing. I actually feel like the Cincinnati Symphony is in my house while I'm listening.
Free Music Review: Telarc Does It Again Hit: 4 Stars
I know this seems a little unusual but I am writing a follow up review to my first one. First of all this is an excellent recording, Telarc has managed to improve on the sound quality of their recordings with the new DSD technique. Erich Kunzel and the Cinncinati Pops deliver a great Tchaikovsky concert. The new "1812" is the "choral" version and is very well done, but I think that the performances of the other works on the disc almost overshadow the "1812" I also have to wonder with a 61 min.+ running what other Tchaikovsky work might have fit? I must say that this recording also has one of the best performances of the "Marche Slav" I have heard in a long time.
Free Music Review: DVD-Audio tracks are awesome Hit: 4 Stars
It's a pretty good recording, first I've heard the 1812 with a children's choir in addition to the Kiev chorus. The cannons sound good on the DVD-Audio track, there's also a DTS track, PCM tracks, and mp3's at 128Kbit. The DVD-Audio track is the best sounding. The only thing I missed was the peal of the bells - they're there, but they don't peal like on other recordings I've heard. If you can play DVD-Audio, this is definitely one to wake the neighbors with...

Great sounding DVD. The cannons are not as impressive as I thought they would be; have the setup (7.1 THX Cert system), but overall fine audio quality.
