Free Music Review: Two Mile-High Concerto Performances On One CD

Over the period of the past thirty years, Nadja Salerno-Sonneneberg has proven herself to be one of America's, and the world's, greatest violinists, regardless of gender. She has played all of the great violin concertos and made recordings of more than a few of them. By her own admission, however, until this live recording from November 2004, Ms. Sonnenberg had never recorded one of the big showcases in the field, namely Tchaikovsky's D Major concerto, a work that any violinist worth their salt must take on as they would for those of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mendelssohn. And indeed that's what she does on this recording with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the orchestra's Conductor Laureate Marin Alsop, for her own NSS Music label. The epic feel of the opening movement and the relative tranquility of the second movement flow rather well, and go into the fiery and technically challenging finale. Ms. Sonnenberg handles everything with incredible skill.
And like Hilary Hahn's recent recording of the Tchaikovsky concerto, Sonnenberg adds a great contemporary addition to the violin concerto realm, the one composed in 2003 by her good friend, the Brazilian-born violinist and composer Clarice Assad. The flavor of South American and Latin American music permeates this work throughout, particularly in the work's fiery finale (which, in its tempo markings, is, not surprisingly, marked "Con Fuoco" (or "with fire"), though it does retain a tonal balance by being in D Major, like the Tchaikovsky, and there are occasional elements of Prokofiev and Stravinsky scattered throughout this concerto.
Ms. Sonnenberg's innate and virtuosic ability with two violin concertos that are spaced one hundred twenty-five years apart in time demonstrates exactly how well warhorses and contemporary pieces can stand side by side and provide a great experience. An equal amount of credit, however, must also go to Ms. Alsop and the Colorado Symphony, one of the great conductor/orchestra combinations in American classical music today (Ms. Alsop is now in the Music Director's chair in Baltimore). The end result is one of the great recordings to date of Tchaikovsky, and an introduction to a newer piece sure to become a bigger part of the repertoire in the years to come.
