Free Music Review: A spectacular concert in SACD

This was my first multi-channel SACD purchase, and it completely sold me on the format. This is, beyond doubt, the best 1812 I have ever heard. You can feel the power of this performance immediately when you hear the opening chorus: the vocals are incredibly precise, and the use of different channels for male and female voices adds a nice touch. The disk makes perfect use of all the speakers throughout the overture: the rear surrounds are clearly distinct, but don't overshadow the main qualities of the front channels. When the fireworks go off at the end, I feel I'm on stage watching the whole thing.
Romeo and Juliet is, of course, an old standby of romantic classical music and normally not my favorite. But the musical range in this performance is truly impressive, and you can really feel the emotion during the last third of the piece.
The Sibelius works are a perfect accompaniment to Tchaikovsky, and have a great deal of variety, from the moodiness of Pohjola's Daughter to the simple melody in the last movement of the Karelia Suite.
A wonderful disk to show off a good sound system.
