Free Music Notes for Pytor Illych Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker - Complete BalletFree Music Review: Very, Very Good Hit: 5 Stars
This disc has had much acclaim, and for good reason. I was amazed Philips was able to put the whole ballet on one disc, but they did. This makes it a great bargain. But the performance is simply the best available today. The speeds are fast, but I never had the feeling they were too fast. I think the whole piece flows beautifully, and the playing of the Kirov is detailed, romantic, energetic and dramatic. This disc is like biting into ripe fruit, it bursts with flavor. It is undeniably "Russian" in character, and Gergiev gets lots of credit for building this orchestra into such a fine unit. It's a great disc.
Free Music Review: What a wonderful performance Hit: 5 Stars
What a wonderful performance: The Kirov under Valery Gergiev did their magic tricks again, bringing the old E.T.A. Hoffmann story to life. The children, the toys, Mr. Drosselmeyer, the nutcracker (with qualifications), the mouse king, Clara (the heroine), the Christmas tree, dancing flowers, fairies and everybody and everything else are alive and well in this performance--except of course the mouse king. The orchestra, as expected, is great, better than in any other recording, and the sound of the CD is warm and magical. Now you can enjoy this nostalgic music over and over again in an incredible performance.
Free Music Review: The Best Recording Ever! Hit: 5 Stars
This is by-far the best recording of the 'Nutcracker' ballet! I was very pleased to see that it is performed here in it's complete entirety by the very same orchestra that Tchiakovsky originally wrote it for more than a century ago! It was surprising to see the whole ballet on one CD. The songs are recorded on complete digital equiptment and make you feel like your right in front of the orchestral pit at the ballet! It is much better than the movie soundtracks and all the recordings by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Buy this CD for your collection now! It is, as I said, the best of it's kind!
Free Music Review: The Very Definition of Enchanting Hit: 5 Stars
This masterpiece is the very definition of "enchanting" - it is a vibrant, playful, and thoroughly beautiful work of art. I have found no significant weaknesses with this CD, except (and this may very well be due to my own skewed expectations) the Waltz of the Flowers seems to be played a little too fast. Again, this may be due to comparing it to my hazy childhood memories of listening to Tchaikovsky on audio tape. I *believe* this is the best all-around recording available, but please correct me if I am mistaken - I wouldn't mind adding another Tchaikovsky to my collection.
Free Music Review: Disciplined, Lively, Wonderful Hit: 5 Stars
What a great recording! The Kirov Orchestra is apparently a small ensemble usual to the ballet theater. The small size of the orchestra allows the music to be wonderfully defined and precise. The orchestra is disciplined and the tempo is always perfect. Yet the music is performed in so lively a manner and so beautifully played by accomplished instrumentalists one becomes immersed in the ebb, flow and drama of the score. Nothing else impinges on your enjoyment. The CD is well recorded and of exceptional clarity. Get this CD. You will never regret it.
