Free Music Notes for Team Sleep

Free Music Review: As a Deftones fan, this is one amazing disc
Hit: 5 Stars

Earlier I realized that a lot of the albums I bought this year were from veterans: the new Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, System of a Down and the upcoming Deftones, Tool(hopefully) and Pearl Jam. The oft-mentioned but seldom heard besides live band from Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has always been fodder for talk and discussion. How would it sound? Would it break up his own band? Is it good? Well finally we get it and boy is it ever good.

Ataraxia: I have no idea what that name means either. What sounds like Chinese speech gives way to a big bassy verse before a guitar line comes in and brings the song to new heights. Quite an effective opener. 9/10

Ever(Foreign Flag): First single and quite beautiful song. Sounds like Lucky You from the self-titled Deftones. I always found the crooning vocals of Chino better than his big scream-y stuff so it's nice to listen to it. 9/10

Your Skull is Red: Could sound like a Deftones song. Wave sounds and bells before the song explodes into a White Pony-esque sound. The music just sounds captivating and epic with nice use of octaves. 9/10

Princeton Review: It's a very delicate and tranquil song but it's NOT sung by Chino. It's sung by Pinback's Rob Crow who also shows up elsewhere on the album. It's okay but after 3 excellent songs in a row it just doesn't have a captivating feel to it. 7.5/10

Blvd Nights: Another quiet guitar intro which gives way to another White Pony-like number with some great octave sounds during the chorus. As always, great vocals by Chino. Definately an album highlight. 9/10

Delorean: A tribute to the Back to the Future car maybe? Anyway it's an incredibly short interlude based on a melancholy guitar figure. It's okay but it could've been left off but it fits nicely into the other song. Since it's an interlude, no score.

Our Ride to the Rectory: Some beautiful "shimmer" chords mixed with Chino's vocals and Rob's and some Cure like guitar lines. It's a pretty good song but like Princeton it's not really a highlight on first listen. 7.5/10

Tomb of Liegia: A repeating melancholy piano line mixed with strange ambient noises with the music "cutting out" throughout the song. Vocals are by Mary Timony and lyrics are about a murder apparently. Meh, it's ok. 7.5/10

Elizabeth: Some folk guitar and textural ambience. I have a problem with the drums which seem too "busy". Vocals sound like Rob's which aren't as beautiful as Chino's but still gets the emotion across, if only barely. 8/10

Staring at the Queen: Sounds like 2 modems dueling each other for the beginning. It's another one of those musical interludes that could've been left off but they put it on anyway. Very shifty ambience but some nice guitar work. Again, interludes have no score.

Ever Since WW1: Back with the guitar/ambience sounds but in a less intrusive way. It's nice to finally hear Chino on the album(who hasn't been heard yet since Rectory). It's not a definite highlight but enjoyable regardless. 8/10

King Diamond: Mary Timony and Chino do a weird duet for this one and it could've been left off. It just seems like they could've worked on it more or at least abandon the entire idea. Lots of strange noises that don't add anything. 7/10

Live from the Stage(formally known as Natalie Portman, an incredibly beautiful and talented actress btw): Very soft guitar with what sounds like slide guitar in the background and Chino mixed a little in the back giving an almost ghost-like vocal. It's not until a little after 2 minutes does the song lift off. No singing besides the vocalizing but it's epic in its own right. 9/10

Paris Arm: And yet another musical interlude with keyboards and a french speaking woman. End has a sound that reminds me of a mad fly of some kind. Like the other interlude, no score.

11-11: So we come to the closer and it's sung by Rob. It doesn't have the power that a closer should have. If Live from the Stage(I would like to say Natalie Portman instead but oh well) was the closer it would've been a remarkable closer. 7.5/10

When Opeth released Damnation, the softer yin to Deliverance's heavier yang, I didn't like it much because there wasn't much variation in the songs. With the Team Sleep debut, while the songs do have a recognizable sound due to the drum machine/ambience aspect, it's still quite an enjoyable debut.

Team Sleep Poster

Team Sleep is an artful, experimental, ambient band that is led by frontman Chino Moreno, singer of Deftones, the highly influential, two-time Grammy winning group that has sold over 4 million albums worldwide. With contributions from musician friends and production by Terry Date (Deftones) and Ross Robinson (Cure, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit), Team Sleep's ethereal debut album builds a new fan base for a fresh new band.
While the Deftones were racking up millions of album sales around the world and collecting Grammy Awards on the back of their apocalyptic metal sound, front man Chino Moreno was endlessly tinkering away on this side project that seems to owe more to the ethereal-electronic moods of Radiohead. Team Sleep may not add any extra decimals to his bank account but it reveals that the singer is not just another testosterone-fueled crybaby. Working with guest singers Mary Timony (ex-Helium) and Rob Crow (Pinback), plus DJ Crook and Hella drummer Zach Hill, Moreno has made a beautifully crafted album that doesn't employ a single note of distortion or angst without complete intellectual engagement. Really, it's hard to imagine the dude from Papa Roach coming up with a sideways tribute to ivy-league schools ("Princeton Review") or a song inspired by an Edgar Allen Poe poem ("Tomb of Liegia,") --Aidin Vaziri
