I don't now why in the hell Motown took so long to issue this one. This is one of the best albums Norman Whitfield has ever done with any artist. For some reason the Tempts were getting tired of the "psychedelic soul" he was injecting in their music, even though he continued to pump out his from every artist he dealt with. Even though Whitfield worked with artist from Marvin Gaye,David Ruffin, to Rare Earth and did some landmark work with them all he was very controlling. To be honest I don't know what all the complaining was really all about regarding Norman because after he left the Tempts only one producer (Jeffrey Bowen) ever came close to matching the oustanding work he'd done with them. This was the last album that hed did withe Tempts' and they went out with a bang. All the songs are great and the remastering on this particular cd is some of the best I've ever heard. The voices like most Temptaion albums flow back and forth and you can hear it so clearly through the speakers (especially if you have good ones). I don't play this album so much as I use to when I fisrt bought it because once listening to it you have hear the whole thing, its that great. My favorites if I had to choose would be all of them, but I guess if I had a gun to my head I would have to go with "You've Got My Soul On Fire" and "Heavenly". Again nothing but the best from the great Temptations and their super producer Norman Whitfield. Now if Motown can just remaster and reissue the rest of the Norman Whitfield produced albums from the Tempations(Wish It Would Rain to Masterpiece). I know Motown were pumping out a lot of hits back in the day, but come on and give up the goods on some of those great albums.

Here is the album where Norman Whitfield said goodbye to the Temptations and hello to a new L.A. groove. To record his final LP with the group in 1973, no longer did Whit use the Funk Brothers to lay down Motown's old-school Detroit funk. Now he was in Hollywood, cutting these band tracks with discovery Rose Royce. 1990 followed the albums All Directions and Masterpiece, two classics of Whitfield's psychedelic soul. This album worked the successful Whitfield formula: short radio hits that snapped with soul and tight rhythms, complemented by spaced-out suites about a screwed-up society that took up almost a whole LP side. 1990 featured "Let Your Hair Down," a No. 1 R&B smash, and two singles that hit the Top 10, the sublime "Heavenly" and "You've Got My Soul On Fire." Yet the album, although No. 2 R&B and Top 20 Pop, has never been issued on CD until now.
