Free Music Review: A Retrospective From Motown's Finest Male Vocal Group

To this day the Temptations are still a functioning unit. I wish I could deem that as a compliment. The only original Tempt alive is Otis Williams who seldom, if ever, sang lead. Their recording career effectively ended after their superb 1972 opus "Papa Was A Rolling Stone". By then, only Melvin Franklin and Otis remained from the original line-up. It would have been an ideal time for that moniker to be retired. But music's a big business so possibly there's no shame.
But back in the day they were Motown's quintessential male vocal and dance group who could do no wrong. When it came to romantic pop, they had few peers. Smokey Robinson served as songwriter and producer for most of these. And there was plenty more than just the great breakthrough of "My Girl". Indeed David Ruffin's buttery warm baritone was just right for that gem. But not to be overlooked was his (and the group's) equally compelling performances of the rocking "It's Growing" and the sweet "My Baby". When Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams secured a lead vocal spot, they offered a perfect balance. Hear Eddie's tenor on the R&B nugget "I'll Be In Trouble" and Paul's sincerity on the moving "Don't Look Back".
Producer Norman Whitfield removed the strings and provided their R&B pop with added urgency with the 1-2-3 knockout classics of "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "Beauty's Only Skin Deep" and "I'm Losing You", all circa 1966. And with "I Wish It Would Rain", David's gloom was truly felt albeit set against one of their catchiest tunes with strings.
Rid of ego-driven Ruffin, Whitfield delved into funk with Dennis Edwards as his replacement. Though he didn't match David's lead vocals, he made a damn good fist of it, especially on "I Can't Get Next To You" and "Cloud Nine". These two rank amongst their greatest.
By the 1970's only the expressive protest of "Ball Of Confusion", Eddie's calm and meditative "Just My Imagination" and "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" was worthy of any greatness.
I still play my original "Temptations Greatest Hits" LP from 1966 more, when David was the front man, before Paul went into dissipation and they were (short of the Impressions) the greatest post doo-wop singers. But this is still a much-needed twofer. And Melvin Franklin's lead on "Old Man River" is a must hear.
Anthology-The Best of The Temptations Poster
The Temptations have long had the reputation for being able to out-sing, out-dress, and out-dance any vocal group in sight. Their earliest hits featured either the grits-and-gravy stylings of David Ruffin ("My Girl," "I Wish It Would Rain") or the gossamer falsetto of Eddie Kendricks ("The Way You Do the Things You Do," "You're My Everything"). Replacing Ruffin with Dennis Edwards, the group went to a five-lead-voices concept ("Cloud Nine," "I Can't Get Next to You," "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone") that kept them in hits for another two decades. This 46-song, 2 CD set sports every one of these classics, an incredible live! version of "Ol' Man River," the seriously funky &quo;Shakey Ground," the Rick James-assisted "Standing on the Top," and many, many magical musical moments more. Bassman Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, and the unrelated Otis Williams were the other key members .
