Free Music Review: The Space Before Time

When this album came out, I felt it didn't live up to the standard set by Cricklewood Green, and when Space In Time came out next, it had sufficiently more acoustic to make a direct comparison to Cricklewood Green unfair, but when TYA went back to the straight rock strengths of Rock and Roll Music to the World, I knew there wasn't going to be another Cricklewood Green, so I started listening to Watt more closely.
I soon found that where Cricklewood has great space rock drift (like 50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain -- one of my favorite songs), Watt spaced out in a different direction -- jazz -- and it is a superb album.
Over the years, it's really held up well, and it's extremely possible that I now like it more than Cricklewood Green.
The breaks that they drift into are the purest Ten Years After there is. Nobody wraps the sounds of individual instruments around each other in complimentary sounds like Ten Years After when they're at the top of their game. (And, yes, TYA with Joe Gooch is STILL Ten Years After, because TYA was NOT Alvin Lee, and I have all his material, too.)
The unfortunate thing with TYA was that Lee took Woodstock's "Going Home" to be a mandate to make everything sound like sped-up 50's rock, and that's when they started to lose it -- the early jazz/blues stuff that they had been doing on TYA and Undead matured with Watt, but was almost never seen again because by the time Watt and Space In Time came out everything had to sound like it was supercharged by Going Home.
It's one of my chief complaints about Rock and Roll Music to the World -- not enough drift, although the extended break in Standing At the Station is superb, and I wish there had been more of that type, than the straight ahead stuff.
Also, although most folks pay it no mind, Positive Vibrations is actually one of my favorite TYA albums because it does make a severe attempt -- and suceeds to a very nice degree -- in returning to that jazz-rock-blues fusion that TYA started out with.
But back to Watt -- If you're looking for what I feel was (and is still with Joe Gooch) TYA's greatest musical strength -- the ability to have Chick Churchill, Ric Lee, and Leo Lyons interweave tight, tight, tight runs not only for the lead guitar to periodically touch base on, but between themselves as well, then Watt will do the job.
It has some uneven spots, especially selecting Sweet Little Sixteen live at Isle of Wight to end the album with, but it's nice rock. I just think they should have started with it, and then gone into the smoother stuff.
This is an album you have to pay attention to when you listen to it, because the songs change and go really neat places. Buy it.
