Free Music Notes for Tenacious D The Pick of DestinyFree Music Review: Feels more like an extended soundtrack than an album Hit: 4 Stars
It's an excellent opening track, just for hearing Dio alone, but then it's another dozen or so before we encounter something that's longer than three minutes long, and the average length is two minutes. While nothing overstays its welcome, and Black's voice is still great, and the guitar work still graceful... so many of these songs are over before they get a chance to begin.
There's a much wider variety of music on here, like they're spreading their wings, but when it gets brilliant it feels more accidental than inspired. I think "Master Exploder" is genius, but I enjoy it more for its artistic merits than because it rocks or is funny. I think the problem is that this album can't find a groove in between "rock n' roll with a sense of humor" and nearly Zappa-inspired antics.
In the end, with its lack of cohesion, and the brevity of the album and most of the songs, I feel like I got a soundtrack with a couple bonus tracks.
Free Music Review: Always a pleasure Hit: 4 Stars
I've always been a fan of Jack Black. I like how he takes the music so seriously, yet has a lot of fun with the lyrics and creation of the songs.
The movie Pick of Destiny was pretty good, although ended without ending. If you are a fan of tenacious D, you will like this soundtrack. Its got fun songs, awesome melodies, and memorable lyrics that will crack you up.
If you take life too seriously, you won't get jack black and you won't enjoy it either. There are a million bands that make serious songs about serious topics, i'm glad that i can put Tenacious D on to make me laugh, or at least crack a smile. I recommend this to anyone that just likes all different kinds of music.
I do have to say in regard to overall tenacious d, that if you dont have thier debut album, get that one first, its much better in my opinion, but this album is a good supplement to it.
All in all, it is worth a listen.
Free Music Review: I am down with the D Hit: 4 Stars
First, see the movie, or you will be lost. Very good soundtrack. This
has the best D songs yet. The little acoustic songs, " baby," (one of
my favorites) "Dude"( untill the end) and yeah yeah yeah, " history." Plus some heavy jams," Master exploder." More up-tempo, " break in-city, car chase city." Those two are simply o.k. Then, the un-believably catchy, " the government totally sucks," and the two part, "Papagenu." Yes most of the songs are very short. So what?? I agree There are a few songs which could have been a little longer, but most of the songs fit as short. The cd's only 33 minutes. The two longest songs, " Kickapoo." 4 minutes. And the 6 minute battle between the D and the devil,(Dave Grohl)" Beelzeboss." Like the 1st album there's a lot of f-words. Except this time I would guess almost double. For a 2nd album that's 20+ minutes shorter than the 1st album, that's a freaking lot. Enjoyable.
Free Music Review: A little more could have been done here, but still good Hit: 4 Stars
Tenacious D's first album was by far one of the most original and funny albums ever released, but this album takes several steps back. The Musicianship is still excellent, the metal portions still rock, but the vocals and songs just don't work on album like the past album. This will set well for the movie soundtrack. Some of this material is reminiscent of stuff off the masterworks, which had some of their really early stuff on it, which was not as polished. More could have been done with this soundtrack, like a little less pointless swearing (annoying after a bit, Jack needs to learn that silence in sertain parts is OK, he doesn't need to fill it.) Otherwise, still has several songs that are just darn funny, and Dio's appearence on here is priceless. Pick this up while you can in the limited edition 3d front.
Free Music Review: ... Hit: 4 Stars
If you go into this expecting either an actual album or a masterpiece then of course you won't like it that much. If you go in expecting a good time with good music then you will love it. Jaybles and KG really bring it with this soundtrack, one of the better ones I have ever heard. Of course the best song is "Kickapoo", Meatloaf and Dio really make that song. JB plays a backseat to their awesome vocals. As much of a joke as their first album was, the majority of these songs are even jokier. Even with the jokes, some songs have a sincerity that only a true song can have. "Baby" really surprised me and it is quite a beautiful song. Songcraftmanship is always at a forefront, mostly because they can write catchy songs with great instrumentation. It's a good CD, not great but definitely better than OK.
