Free Music Notes for Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny

Free Music Review: RISE "D" FANS!!!
Hit: 4 Stars

It's a pretty cool soundtrack thing, (Although it's not as good as their debut), but I'd think that were would be more reviews for it... Where are the fans?

Free Music Review: Worth buying
Hit: 4 Stars

Doesn't have the magic of the first album, but has a few funny tracks worth listening to.

Free Music Review: The Greatest Soundtrack on Earth?
Hit: 3 Stars

The answer to the above question is - sadly - no. But since the D are in fact the greatest band on earth, I won't complain too much. In short, this is not album I hoped for. As a follow-up to their classic debut, this disc falls far short. That's not to say it isn't worth picking up though. It definitely rocks, and Jack's voice is as awesome as ever.

The frequent gripes about the short duration of most of the tracks (and the entire CD) are true. But it is worth remembering that if you remove all the spoken-word bits from the first album, the total running time isn't that much longer. Many of the tracks found here exist mainly to counterpoint the plot of the movie.

This CD is not without it's moments. The opening track, "Kickapoo," must be recognized as a Tenacious D classic. And even though "History" has been well known for years to devotees of the D, I am very glad to have a great rendition of it on an album. "Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown)" is another great track - even if it loses a bit outside the context of the movie.

Even the lesser tracks are growing on me as I listen to it more. I think I had to get past the first few listens, in order to accept that it simply is not as great as their debut. That album is such a supremely awesome piece of work; I hoped the D would follow it up with something equal. I was pleased to see the album debut in Billboard's Top Ten - I hope that Jack and Kyle continue their reign and record more music.

Free Music Review: Over-Produced and Pretentious
Hit: 3 Stars

Tenacious D has been steadily gaining popularity in recent years thanks to Jack Black's movie success and the inevitable P2P networks that exist on the Internet. Their first album was clever and funny, but even though they claimed they were the best band in the world, it didn't seem like they let their proclaimations get to their head. With Tenacious D starring in their own movie and with their popularity at an all-time high, all the talk has gotten to their heads. This record is simply not as good as their debut, and there is an almost palpable pretentiousness associated with it. The only song that made me laugh on the first listen through was "Classico," a quick run through of a few classical snippets with JB's nonsensical lyrics and scat thrown overtop.

If you're a diehard fan, you will find something to like here. They still have their distinct sound, but it just doesn't feel the same anymore.

Free Music Review: Too short, too little new material.
Hit: 3 Stars

I've seen the defense that this "is a soundtrack" and isn't the official 2nd-album by The D. And while I can appreciate that line of thinking, the fact is that they've been in the spotlight for 9 years now (since being a Mr.Show bumper in '98), and in that time they've only managed to squeak-out their debut release and... this.
Less than 35-minutes of music, much of it feeling very filler-like, including two recycled tracks ('History' and a revamp of 'Classico'). A fan can't help but feel disappointed.
At least the price (esp. here on Amazon) is right. It's priced just above an EP, and that's about how much new music you get.

I do hope they buckle-down and get to writing a proper new album. Hearing the genuis that is 'Kickapoo' on this soundtrack just reminds us HOW AMAZING Tenacious D can be when they really put their minds to it.
