Free Music Review: Heroism Revisited
Hit: 5 Stars

It's never too late to revisit the myths of the past. We see and hear the excitement, the stress, the fear, even almost the loyalty and sacrifice that the simple men in that tale experienced. Facing down an adversary in battle is an emotional event and the music in the soundtrack captures some of the desperation, the "battle rush" spoken of in old sagas. Nowadays heroism isn't celebrated enough, like true manliness, it is almost forgotten. Yet, this track captures a sense of masculine celebration, even in the heat of battle. It seems to acknowledge the sense of loss over a fallen comrade, and honors sacrifice. And aren't the old tales really talking about us? Teaching us about the sacrifice and heroism of our forebears, it's something we could use a bit more of. No apologies, this movie and it's theme are not for the faint hearted. Almost Wagnerian, without the pretense, and very, very good.

Free Music Review: Jerry Goldsmith in awesome adventure mode
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Jerry Goldsmith's triumphant return to adventure films. Unlike "The Mummy" and "The Haunting," which are by-the-numbers scores, Goldsmith clearly invested a lot of thought and emotion into this rousing score. If you're like me, you won't get past the first track until you've listened to it 4 or 5 times...it kicks! I love how the orchestra (a BIG one) blends with electronic elements, exotic percussion, and wonderful use of a male chorus. Some of the action cues are a bit overdone, but why quibble when there's nearly an hour of music to savor. It's all seamlessly done. Author Michael Crichton writes a nice tribute to Jerry inside the CD liner. Along with "The Phantom Menace," this is clearly one of the best movie scores of the year...and certainly one of Goldsmith's best scores of the decade. Bravo!

Free Music Review: Jerry Goldsmith at his best ever !!! Can't miss it!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is such an impressive score that the words almost can't come out my mouth ! The first time I listened to it I was once again astonished by Jerry Goldsmith huge talent to turn imagens into vibrant, exciting and powerful sound. For some years I've been following Jerry's work as a soundtrack and score collector and his unique list of scores for the most various kind of movies, from comedy to action, from drama to thriller. The guy is simply a genius and this new score he accomplished certainly guarantees and confirms his place in my top 10 list of movie composers of all time, together with names such as John Williams, Marc Schaiman, Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman, Basil Poleouris, John Barry, Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman and James Horner. A masterpiece just impossible to miss. An inspiration for movie fans worldwide! Five stars at least !!!

Free Music Review: Total Goldsmith
Hit: 5 Stars

The composer's best score in nearly a decade, better than Mulan, as fully engaged as Basic Instinct as it plays to Goldsmith's strengths as a specialist in infiltrating dangerous territory. Some will compare to Wind and the Lion for the Arabic scales but this has less to do with that accomplishment than with Goldsmith's hard edged gritty Western sound for Rio Conchos or Take a Hard Ride, just pared down a little and given a contemporary classical exposition (clean lines, less ornamentation). This is the perfect score for the Crichton original, presenting a memorable theme with a strong low melody, and some of Goldsmith's classiest action writing this side of Roxy Loses from Basic Instinct. This one's perfectly structured and chiselled as a dramatic score. A lean classic.

Free Music Review: Why do you want to buy the soundtrack?
Hit: 5 Stars

I have seen the movie. It is OK if you like slasher movies (as there was very little adventure in the film that mostly cut-up odd people and old women alike.) I find the soundtrack far superior to the movie. So are you buying this soundtrack to remember the movie? If so it works. However, the soundtrack works better as a stand-alone entity.

There is a wide variety of Mideast music from regional artists. This soundtrack is only a reflection of the Mideastern music. However if this is Jerry Goldsmith's music that you are interested in, this is some of his best.

If it is Viking exotica that your interest in, this is about as good as it gets. And it does make for good background music.
