Free Music Notes for The 13th Warrior: Original Motion Picture SoundtrackFree Music Review: Fiery, haunting, strident AND gentle Hit: 4 Stars
As an accompaniment to an action movie this soundtrack pretty much has it all. Lots of action sequences in the music that really hit the spot interspersed with gentler passages that nevertheless continue with the scores main motifs. Some comment has been made that some people feel this is a turnaround for composer Jerry Goldsmith, a sort of resurgence. Well I've not followed his career per se and I wouldn't call this genius from end to end, but an important point to be made is that this disc can be played from end to end. And really, how many times do you get that? We've all done it, proclaimed a soundtrack as great and then we sit there cherry picking our favourite bits. But with this release this isn't necessary, the music cruises along and its' segments segue into each other and stays your hand from hitting the skip button.
And I guess that's my brief two cents worth regarding this release. Nice audio production by Goldsmith to match the music itself, a few shots from the film and the musical recording within the booklet and a brief page of liner notes by Michael Crichton who wrote the book this film is based on round out the package. If you enjoyed the film you'll really like this soundtrack. If you were unmoved one way or another by the film, or haven't seen it, no matter as you will definitely get some value out of this album regardless.
Free Music Review: Please check your facts!!! Hit: 4 Stars
Sorry to waste everyone's time, but I had to reply to comments made in a review by Johannes Leonard Rusten: "I'm from Norway, and [a] viking named Hrothgar?? Come on!!" Although I am not from Norway, I can tell you that "Hrothgar" is absolutely an authentic Viking name. The name and character of Hrothgar are taken directly from the epic poem BEOWULF, upon which "The 13th Warrior" is based. While the poem itself was written just after the time of the Vikings, the tale of Beowulf (and Hrothgar)was passed down from actual Viking oral tradition. Accepted by both literary and historical scholars, much of our knowledge of ancient Nordic culture comes from BEOWULF. If you are unfamiliar with BEOWULF, I suggest you look for it on this very website, as I'm sure it is available.
Free Music Review: Goldsmith makes the best Action Music... Hit: 4 Stars
When you listen to this music you can tell it was made by Goldsmith with parts of the music similar to "The Mummy" and "Star Trek Insurrection". Is this a bad thing? Of Course not! The Action-istic percussion he puts together is always great. Goldsmith's music does well in capturing the Arabs and Vikings. For Example, "Viking Heads" incorporates well the action tone of the Vikings. There are some tracks that sound a bit repetitious, which is why I took off a star. But that doesn't mean that this is still great.Should you buy this CD? Of Course.
Free Music Review: A good score Hit: 4 Stars
I'm not a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith, I'm afraid - but this cd was very good. Since the film was such a failure (I'm from Norway, and I viking named Hrothgar?? Come on!!) the music has survived really good. I bought the cd without seeing the film or hearing the music, I enjoyed it. I think this is one of Goldsmith's best. There is only one spot for this cd, and that's in your collection:) You'll like it!
Free Music Review: Predator like Hit: 4 Stars
This new effort of Jerry Goldsmith perfectly captures the mood of those old days. His battle music reminds me of Silvestri's music for Predator. When Arnold prepares himself to battle (the scenes that he makes a bow and stuff). Clearly the influence of John Mc Tiernan I think. A very good effort, but not very original writing of this music makes this in my opinion a 4 star rating.
