Free Music Review: A Wonderful Experience in So Many Ways

This is one of my favorite albums. Probably THE favorite. The arrangements, harmonies, and the vocals of these 5 people. What perfection! The little musical interludes between songs are so great, often musically reflecting a previous or forthcoming track if you listen very carefully. A "mood" song has never been done better than "Dreams/Pax/Nepenthe." Jim Webb tells us about a dream he had last night where "the carousels were stopping-the horses had stopped rocking-someone said 'how shocking'-" and that a kitten stepped upon the keys while he composed the song... The arrangement and vocals are top-notch tinged with an eerie, dreamy sitar.
When this album opens you will immediately hear how vocally talented these 5 people were. Their unique harmonies were unmatched then and are still so today. Then just sit back and enjoy. Billy Davis Jr. takes your breath away with his vocal on "Requiem: 820 Latham" (does anyone know what this title means?!). The song "Paper Cup" was a minor hit and will just make you feel good, reflecting the times - "And livin' ain't so bad without a rudder; and life is kinda groovy in the gutter, if you know how." One of the best features of the album is that it closes as beautifully as it opens... Wraps itself up in a nice bow and says "There ya go!" A wonderful and very much overlooked project.
