Free Music Review: American Gothenburg

Florida Death Metal fans rejoice. They don't all sound like Morbid Angel, Deicide, or Six Feet Under. In fact, these guys sound so Gothenburg I had to check the liner notes. Didn't believe that either, so I looked up some bios, just in case they were from Sweden originally and only recently moved to Tampa. Nope.
That makes this band the most refreshing act I've heard in awhile. Clearly they play to their influences, but are not bound by them. The guitar harmonies are always moving and entertaining, and the solos are much more interested in fitting to the tune rather than just shredding. `Heaven Ablaze' in particular has a great solo in it. `Shattered' is a short instrumental that shows off the melodic side, as well as how well the two guitarists fit together. `My Ruin' is probably the standout track on the album, showcasing the ferocious vocals of Jamie Stewart. The bridge sounds a lot like `Burning Angel' from Arch Enemy.
Their sound is very guitar-oriented, with very little audible bass. All parts are expertly mixed such that neither the guitars, vocals, or drums overpower any other part. That's a pretty good trick, as many Death Metal acts think they won't sound heavy enough if they don't have thunderous bass/drums backing.
The album finishes on a high note with Seven Demons, featuring clean vocal choruses. This is the first and only time clean vocals are heard on the album, and I look forward to more of it on album #2. This is an older song, so that may be why the style is slightly different. The last three tracks `I, Deceiver', `My Ruin', and `Seven Demons' were originally featured on their self-released EP a year earlier. They are remixed here to blend in with the album as a whole.
Speaking of which, the album is superbly assembled. This isn't just a collection of tracks laid down one day, then released. This album has a real theme. The opening `Intro' track really is an intro, not an ambient get-ready-for-some-noise throwaway track. It serves to introduce the listener to the band's style and their musical ability.
The album is also very consistent with its tempo. `Intro' blends right into the beginning of `A Breath Beneath', which after a minute or so rips right into a powerful, upbeat song that immediate makes me hope for a fantasy triple-bill of In Flames, Arch Enemy, and The Absence. Man, would that be a show.
Overall, this album comes highly recommended from me. Given that I find every track to be entertaining, engaging, and that the replay value is high, I give it 100%. Fans of Melodic Death or Gothenburg Death, go get this album!
