Free Music Notes for A Decade of Hits 1969-1979

Free Music Review: Does it get any better than this? I think not
Hit: 5 Stars

A Decade of Hits could be a greatest hits, with only a few omissions. But even on many so-called greatest hits albums you're not likely to get everything you'd like. Usually, you have to shell out even more money for every song by a particular band or artist. And even these often remain largely incomplete. Therefore, it is hardly fair of me to fault A Decade of Hits when it delivers numerous great songs and doesn't even claim to be a greatest hits or complete song collection.

Of the 16 songs on the CD, 13 are excellent are better-than-average, while 2 are "good", and only one unlistenable (appropriately titled Wasted Words, it should never have made its way onto this fine collection), but this is just my opinion, and others are free to disagree. What this means further is that there is better than a 93% satisfaction rate (hence the 5 stars). Moreover, the price is a steal--you would pay more than $1 per song for some of these gems, and yet you're paying much less than that, around $0.75 per for all 16; if you're interested in what you're paying for the best of the best, about 13 or so, you're still paying only $0.92 or so. Simply stated, it does not get much better than this, and one would be hard-pressed to find a better CD collection, across time and genre, band or solo. That is my 2 cents. Now enjoy!

Free Music Review: Perfection!
Hit: 5 Stars

Equally strong as an introduction to the band as well as a summary of their musical accomplishments throughout the seventies, 'A Decade of Hits 1969-1979' is one of those anthologies that no serious music collector should be without.

An incredible live rendition of "Statesboro Blues" breaks the silence in the album to be followed by cult song after cult song of Southern Rock classics ("Midnight Rider", the intrumental anthem "Jessica" and "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" being among the biggest highlights), sweet ballads such as "Melissa" and beautiful instrumentals such as "Little Martha". Another live track "One Way Out" prepares the closing of the album, along with early classics, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", "Dreams" and "Whipping Post". In a word: Perfection!

If the music it carries is not enough by itself, another nice thing about this compilation (I guess it's more a merit of the band than anything else) is that it still leaves room for exploration: it doesn't exhaust by any means all there is to the Allman Bros. As a matter fact, if you dig this hits album, you are very likely to LOVE 'Beginnings' (a CD that combines their first two albums) and their demolishing 'Live at the Fillmore East'.

Free Music Review: Great Allman starter disc
Hit: 4 Stars

Acually this disc deserves 5 stars due to all the hits on it, but i feel for someone who Is already into the Allmans this disc is not a necessity. Most all these cuts can still be heard on classic rock radio. ( A testiment to how good the songs are). But for me, I still love the Disc called "Beginnings" which combines their first two albums on one disc. And of course playing live is how the Allmans really earned their title as americas best southern rock band. Check out the Fillmore disc for that. But all in all Decade is a great overview of their work.

Free Music Review: A really good collection
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a really, really good collection of the Allman Brothers band. You get all of their best stuff from the late 60's and through all of the 70's you get all of the great guitar work played by Duane and Dickey, you get the great vocals and Keyboards by Greg. You cant go wrong with this, it has so many great songs. If you ask me ABB are the best southern rock band of all time. But you should really get the albums but if you cant afford to get them all then this is a great substatute.

Free Music Review: This is what great music is!
Hit: 5 Stars

It's one of those CDs that I leave playing even when I walk out of the room. I don't enjoy leaving the room too much though because then I miss the music.

It's got strong instrumentals that anyone could expect from these guys, but most of all it's the atmosphere that is created. It can be soft and somber and bluesy and rockin' and movin' and laying down in the span of the hour and change that passes by.

Being new to the band, I only knew "Ramblin' Man" and I was one of those who heard "Jessica" and said, "So, THAT'S the name of that song!" But "Southbound" and "Melissa" have quickly become favorites. I have no idea if this IS really the ultimate greatest hits collection for these fellas because I just found out who they are. But I guess I can say that this collection is for those who enjoy Blues style, great guitars, and wild keyboards. I'm now debating whether to buy the Fillmore Concerts because I want to get a taste for their Live stuff. I doubt I'll be disappointed.
