This is one of the live albums that accurately capture the energy and feel of the original Allman Brothers Band. The dual drummers pound through the shuffle beats, Berry Oakley's bass holds down the lower register, and dual keyboards (Greg Allman on organ, Chuck Lavelle on piano) and dual guitars (Dickey Betts and the great Duane Allman) battle on this seven song release. All the songs are extended energetic jam sessions that rock from start to finish. Greg has a great live blues voice, and he wails from the heart on "Statesboro Blues" and mornfully on the classic "Whipping Post". The band showcases their blues roots, and Duane's slide is the perfect complement to Dicky's playing. This is a brilliant live album that is a necessary purchase.
The Allman Brothers at Fillmore East Poster
There has never been a better showcase for improvisational rock than this 1971 concert recording, and few (if any) live rock albums are in its rank. With only two studio albums (and plenty of touring) under their belt, the Georgia sextet tore into the Fillmore East with road-tested buoyancy. Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpassed peaks. Vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman would have been a star in any other setting; here he's merely one more component in a brilliant ensemble. Duane Allman died shortly after At Fillmore East shipped, and the Brothers haven't scaled such heights since. But, then, neither has anyone else. --Steven StolderBlues Music CDs
