Free Music Notes for The Allman Brothers at Fillmore EastFree Music Review: "Deluxe" edition? I don't think so . . . Hit: 2 StarsSave your money. It's shamefully sinful that one of the greatest live rock albums ever has been reissued with such total disregard for the form. AFE "deluxe" reissue--released by Mercury September 2003 & produced by Bill Levenson--can be nearly unlistenable for those of us who have considered this set the holy grail of live albums. Here's the problem: Virtually every track is faded out, with no feel of "live" continuity. I nearly caused a traffic accident when "Trouble No More" was closing and the final notes were faded out! Then I quickly scanned through the rest of both discs and found the same treatment throughout. This has got to be right up there with the worst reissuing SNAFUs of all time. Despite some criticism about the mix of the 1992 double-cd _The Fillmore Concerts_ or the edited-out crowd requests before "Whipping Post" (or was this an alternate version of the song?)or the composite version of "...Liz Reed", at least that set (which the new reissuemirrors, adding only "Midnight Rider" and some slight resequencing) felt like a truly live experience from one of the greatest truly live bands. It's too bad because the recent remastering for "deluxe" (sic) does seem to capture the thunder and lightning of rock's tightest rhythm section better than most previous versions. Don't waste your money on the overpriced new one ($25-30) unless you're willing to edit, fix, and burn your own "deluxe" version. And that won't be easy, either, because of the criminally quick fade-outs and fade-ins that the new set has suffered. Stick with: 1) Your original 1971 vinyl two-LP release, 2) the hard-to-find (and expensive) half-speed master vinyl version, 3) the nearly as hard to find--but truest sounding of all--Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab double-cd, 4) the late-90s "Capricorn Classics" single-disc reissues of _At Fillmore East_ and _Eat a Peach_ or, 5) if you really need most of the songs from these Fillmore East shows in one set, _The Fillmore Concerts_ double disc. Better yet...since most of you probably have this in one form or another already, use the savings from this for gas and beer the next time the Brothers play near your town.
Free Music Review: One of the best live albums of all time Hit: 5 StarsI've listened to this CD more than anyone could imagine. I'll put it down for a month or two and come back to it,not being able to stop playing it for another couple of months. This has been going on for some 25 years now. I love Hendrix, Clapton,Page,Vaughn, Winter,Beck, etc... but there is something about the raw honesty that I hear when Duane Allman starts playing. I've heard and read comments about how some of his solos seem to go on and on. Granted, they are long, but they are journeys that let you in on his improvisational path. The fact that these solos aren't so seamless, shows that his music is very much in tune with the way life goes sometime. Yet, his intonation is one of hope. The live version of Whipping Post , truly backs this statement. I think people really need to listen to these compositions and get away from rating them as air guitar worthy. This CD is air guitar worthy, I also recomend headphones.
Free Music Review: Never has there been a better live album.... Hit: 5 StarsNever has there been a live album better then The Allman Brothers At Fillmore East. The tone is clear, the mood is right and the music is nothing short of amazing! Even the extended jams are classics, in fact thats what makes this live album so great. Many people concider this the greatest live album of all time, and I cant dissagre! When i write about live albums I usualt only talk about the sound and if the band pulled off the songs, I cant do that here I have to talk about each track.'Statesboro Blues' is an Allman Brothers classic with killer slide by Duane, its one of the bands best covers! 'Done Somebody Wrong' is a killer song, its just absolutly perfect! 'Storm Monday' this song always kinda gave me the creeps its just kinda errie to me and i fond my self listenin to this song over and over again. 'You Dont Love Me' is a bluesy rock type song sure to please everyone with its out of this world guitar. 'Hot 'Lanta' is one of the best songs on the record, and one of the best songs The Allman Brothers ever recorded. 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed' This was Dicky Betts best instrumental before this, but when they played it live for this album its made it 1000x's better his guitar work here is nothing short of breath taking! 'Whipping Post' yes the legendary Whipping Post is mind blowing, it is the single greatest live extended jam ever recorded period! The guitar is like a religious experince, it is truly amazing and the the highlight of the album! I wish I could have been At Fillmore East the two nights when The Allman Brothers recorded this legendary album! And you will too once you hear it!
Free Music Review: All these years ago Hit: 5 StarsI first heard this album in 1971 when the fellow who was teaching me guitar at the time said: "Listen to this, it's pretty hot".I'm now writing in 2003, and I've lost track of the number of times I've listened to these tracks. And listening to them again today reminded me that the peak of improvisational rock guitar took place between Cream's farewell concert in 1968 and the Allman Bros' appearance at the Fillmore in 1970. Has there been good music since? Of course. Even just looking at the 70s, music has graced us with Little Feat, Steely Dan, Elvis Costello and the Ramones. Not to mention Joni Mitchell at her peak and Weather Report at its most adventurous. But for a moment there the blues-based, jazz-tinged work of artists like Duane Allman brought the guitar as an instrument to a level of development that really hasn't been duplicated. Sure, there are astonishing artists recording today. But their work is different. Every artist, whatever the medium, reflects his or her time. And for a few years, we were lucky to hear guys like Allman, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Lowell George build from a base that leads back to the delta of Mississippi and the Piedmont of North Carolina. A raw, emotive brand of playing that rewards the listener with a taste of the real.
Free Music Review: simply amazing Hit: 5 StarsThis live recording is generally hailed as one of the greatest of all time. Rightfully so. My introduction to The Allman Brothers Band was with the 1992 The Fillmore Concerts double disc. I thought it was brilliant. Everything I had read was true. What I didn't know was that I was not actually listening to the ORIGINAL recordings the way they were heard on the original album. After hearing the original At Fillmore East I realized that some of the solos were slightly different and that Elizabeth Reed (according to the liner notes in The Fillmore Concerts) was pieced together from two different takes. The 1992 version also sounded a little too slick. The original reigns supreme. Producer Tom Dowd had good intentions with the 1992 version, but did not realize that his tinkering took away from the sheer, one-take beauty of these performances. This is the ultimate Allman Brothers. Impossible not to love and listen to over and over again especially for musicians such as myself. However, buy the deluxe edition that was released on Sept.23. It has all the original mixes plus the incredible One Way Out from Eat A Peach. Mountain Jam, Midnight Rider, Trouble No More are also included and they are excellent. The deluxe edition is the definitive version of these extraordinary performances.
