Free Music Review: I couldn't agree more ... Hit: 5 StarsIndeed, this is one of the two best live albums of all time, along with "It's Alive" by the Ramones. And it also sports one of the great cover photos as well. Could it be that the Ramones lifted the idea for their first cover from this one? ... Nah!The original LP had tremendous sound quality, when Capricorn was still being distributed by Atlantic. It's odd indeed that the Fillmore East cuts that showed up later on "Eat a Peach" sounded so much muddier when Capricorn moved over to Warners for distribution purposes. Anyway, I digress. Listen to this work and marvel at the level of musicianship on display. A few years after this came out, I had pretty much ODed on Southern boogie rock, and can't stand to admit that I was into it so much in the early 1970s. But "Fillmore East" is a work that transcends mere genre and is a timeless classic. Back in the day, many bands that built a loyal following by endlessly gigging around the country were never quite able to translate their appeal to vinyl. This, then, is the biggest case in point. But who cares anyway? This is the only ABB CD your ever need to own.
Free Music Review: Why are you even asking, just buy it!!! Hit: 5 StarsAllman Brothers fans, blues fans, guitar players, human beings. This is THE greatest album of all time. There are no questions, comments or second thoughts. There is no other album as perfect as this one. They should issue this in every single music class for children starting from 1st grade and up. This is what dreams are made of. If you have ever had any notion of picking up a guitar, or even listening to a compact disc, this should be the one you judge everything else to. This is the most brilliant compilation known to man. If someone told me this CD was $100 or even more, I would still have to own it. For those of you out there who are even considering reading a recommendation to buy CD's, this is the only CD you could possibly need to complete any collection. And for those of you who own this, you surely know how valuable a piece of music this is. It hardly seems fair paying so little for a masterpiece such as this. As much as "Gone with the Wind" is possibly the greatest piece of film ever made, this CD blows it away in terms of perfection. If only a video had been taken of this!! Anyways, if you've gotten this far down the line of this recommendation, do yourself a favor and click "buy it now" you will not be disappointed. I still get goosebumps from something 30 years old. That kind of feeling should be shared with all. Duane Allman is undisputedly the best recorded guitarist of all time. Thank you Duane, Gregg, Dickey, Berry, Jaimoe and Butch. ps. "Eat a Peach" ain't bad either.....
Free Music Review: Get a surround system so you can listen to the DTS version Hit: 5 StarsThis album is so hot, it would make the Devil jealous. In the late '60s and early '70s, the pop/rock music scene discovered it wasn't limited to 2-1/2 minutes per song. A lot of European bands did the Progressive Rock gig. Genesis, Yes, ELP and others produced synthesizer heavy, very controlled fusion of classical music and rock/blues. We Americans had the JAM session: free form improvizational blues and rock. This album is one of the finest examples of extended improvizational blues and one of the finest live albums ever. At times, it is soft and saucy relying on Duane Allman's guitar, at other times, it is hard rolling highway music driven by the drums and bass. A great and essential album. "Lord have mercy!"If you have a good surround system, preferably with well matched full range speakers, buy the DTS version. While I am not totally happy with the mix-down engineer's choice of where to place the instruments (the lead guitar shouldn't be in the left rear channel), and I would like a two channel mix, all music, particularly of this quality, deserves better than the CD format. CDs are harsh, brittle, synthetic, unnatural sounding and induce listener fatigue in minutes. The DTS version returns all the richness of the original recording. Sit back and enjoy!
Free Music Review: Live Rock Classic Hit: 5 StarsNot all live albums necessarily lived up to the original studio recordings for all bands from the late 60's and the 70's. The Allman Bros did a great job of representing their material in a live version - in fact, I wish they could take the original version of Elizabeth Reed, and re-do the first two minutes to match the live intro that Betts and Duane did for Fillmore. Those first two minutes on the live disc are simply the duo at their best on the guitar. I am grateful I had one chance to witness this band at Cobo in Detroit. This is simply an essential album (CD). Can you imagine how much more music we could have enjoyed if Duane had lived long enough to spend more time with Clapton - and maybe even a moment with Stevie Ray. If you haven't heard Duane's work on Boz Scagg's Loan Me a Dime, seek it out.
