Nice collection from the seminal drone pop turned seminal indie pop band from Texas. The record opens with "The Only Living Boy Around" one of the catchiest tunes they have ever done, rivalled only by "Aaron and Maria" and "Born on the Cusp" from 2006's Set Free. This is followed by "Waking Up in Hard to Do," "On My Way," a slightly altered version of a song from their first album, The Fun of Watching Fireworks, and "High Fidelity Vs. Guy Fidelity." These are all nice drone pieces, but the stunning poppiness of the lead-off track may have put the listener in the mood for more upbeat work. Such a listener will be dissapointed, although there are treasures here, including the jingle "Dr. Pepper" that the band says it offered to the soft-drink company, "Magnificent Seventies," and the truly magnificant "Diana Slowburner," also from their first album. For the most part, however, this collection sees the band staying faithful to its drone roots, with songs like "Living Room Incidental #2," and the two live tracks at the end disc providing engaging wallpaper music, if such a beast is possible. Fortunately, after the mellinium the AAS would turn at least partially toward more melodic, pop-oriented material on such outstanding albums as The Golden Band and Know By Heart. As such, Through the 90's serves as a send-off for a fine drone-pop band whose musical imagination could not be sustained by the stylestic boundaries of the genre.
