Free Music Notes for RetrospectiveFree Music Review: The early R+B plus the later psychedelic Hit: 5 StarsThe Animals, a group that included Eric Burdon and Alan Price, were the first major pop stars to emerge from Newcastle, a city located about 300 miles north of London, therefore far removed from where most talent scouts were searching. It is fortunate for us all that the Animals were discovered because they recorded some of the best R+B music to come of the UK in the sixties.
Their biggest hit was House of the rising sun, a re-working of a folk song (apparently inspired by Josh White's version of the song) that gave them a transatlantic number one hit. They had five other top ten UK hits with Mickie Most, these being I'm crying, Don't let me be misunderstood (a cover of a Nina Simone song), Bring it on home to me (a Sam Cooke cover), We gotta get out of this place (here represented by the American single version, not the British single version) and It's my life.
After they split with Mickie Most, they switched to another record label, where they had some success using the name Eric Burdon and the Animals but with a somewhat different musical style (psychedelic instead of R+B), including two more UK top ten hits (Don't bring me down, San Franciscan nights) and several lesser hits of which Inside looking out, Help me girl, When I was young and Sky pilot are included here. Alan Price left the group before the split with Mickie Most and had several hits as a solo singer. These are outside the scope of this collection but are easy to find.
If you want just one single CD containing all the great songs by the Animals, this is it.
Free Music Review: So Young & Pretty Hit: 5 StarsThe Animals' new "Retrospective" is a marvelous collection. It includes the amazing sound of the band. The technical aspects of the remastering make the recordings crisp and almost pop out of the speakers. Their first big hit was the excellent "House of the Rising Sun" with its crying organ and Burdon's powerful emotional vocals, "The only thing that gambling is is a suitcase & a trunk; and the only time that he is satisfied is when he's on a drunk." And then Alan Price's organ wails. Classic and crisp, it pours from the speakers reborn. My favorite Animals track is the wild "It's My Life" with unique guitar part, the thumping bass and the tap of the sticks on the cymbals flying out of the speakers, "There'll be women & misfortune." One of the favorites from the Vietnam era and probably one of the most popular oldies for our soldiers in Iraq is the classic "We Gotta Get Out of This Place." On "Retrospective," the bass thumps infectiously, the cymbals clang, and Burdon's vocals goes through the roof, "My little girl you're so young & pretty; and one thing I know is true, you'll be dead before your time is due." These are some of the finest moments in classic rock. Other highlights include the churning "Inside--Looking Out," the smoky "San Franciscan Nights" and of course "Boom Boom." This package has great notes, a great selection of the Animals' best, but most of all the high standard of technical excellence in remastering makes this an essential disc even for those who have these tunes on vinyl or earlier CD releases. Wow!
Free Music Review: Finally. Nothing is missing! Hit: 5 StarsOver the years, there has always been some type of "greatest hits" album from The Animals. But, it would always be missing 2 or 3 essential songs. Now, we finally have all their great tunes on one CD. Take a listen to "Help Me Girl". You never hear this song on the radio anymore. But, it sure stirs up some great memories for me. The piano riff does it. "Sky Pilot", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "Monterey", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and other great songs round out the mix. And to get "Spill the Wine", too? This is a great CD with clean sound.
Free Music Review: Eric Burdon, the Jim Morrison of England Burdon is a genius. Hit: 5 StarsEric Burdon is one of the greatest singers of all time. Burdon fronted two bands, first, the Animals from 1964-1966 and after that group split up, Burdon recruited a new band called Eric Burdon & the Animals that lasted from late 1966-1968, unfortunately but at least this great incarnation is caught on camara on the Dvd set The Complete Monterey Pop Festival. Eric Burdon is a very underrated singer and this is some really great music. If you're a fan of the Doors, Cream, Led Zeppelin, the Yardbirds, or the Rolling Stones, you should definatley check this out.
Free Music Review: All the Hits are Here!!! Hit: 5 StarsThe kids now-a-days don't know what great music is! Oh no--I'm starting to sound like my parents...! This CD is a great introduction of what us "boom boom" boomers use to groove on! I do remember the 60's and it's great sounds!
I've been a big fan of Eric Burdon and the Animals since the release of "House of the Rising Sun." It's great finally have a CD with the complete span of Burdon's work for a great price! Eric Burdon and War played at my high school prom back in 1971! (He was so cool!) Eric Burdon is one of rock's most identifiable signature vocalists. Mick Jagger has got nothing on him! The sound quality is fanastic! (It must re-mastered)
Of the 22 tracks, my favorites are "House of the Rising Sun," "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," "It's My Life," "When I Young," "San Franciscan Nights," "Sky Pilot," "White Houses" and "Spill the Wine."
Take out the love beads, comb your hair down, and light this one up! This CD is a must have!!!!!
