Free Music Notes for The Greatest Hits!

Free Music Review: They were a very intelligent band.
Hit: 4 Stars

I don't understand why, in a world in which one can purchase a reissue of every recording made by groups from Free Design to Vanilla Fudge, one can't find reissues of all this wonderful band's original LPs. By the time they recorded Birthday under the direction of Bones Howe, they had achieved a mastery of vocal arranging, overdubbing & stereo effects. Along with the Fifth Dimension (whose recorded catalogue is also sadly lacking), The Association is a treasure of Sixties pop.

While they may have sounded like lightweights, all of their albums contained thoughtful lyrics that have outlasted the Up Against the Wall histrionics of their hipper peers. They were a very intelligent band, & if sincerity doesn't count for much these days, that only reflects the sad state of the current pop scene.

Free Music Review: A great group ... one of several very good albums...
Hit: 5 Stars

Yes, as a "Greatest Hits" album it has some of their best work.... but you're missing out if you never heard the earlier albums (as well as some of the work they did after this album came out.) They also did several songs on the soundtrack album from the movie, "Goodbye, Columbus", and THAT is the album I would love to get my hands on...I just cannot seem to find it anywhere (a close-up picture of Ali McGraw graces the cover.)

Free Music Review: Most underrated band of the 60's
Hit: 5 Stars

An overlooked pop group who really never got the credit they deserve, but that is ok, because there songs are still being played on the radio today, Do you think we will hear Limp Bizkit or Blink182 on the radio 30 years from now?, I don't think so, A pop band like this has longevity in their songs because their meaning can appeal to a wide variety of people, romantic songs with a psychedelic twist, much better than all the whiny songs of the 90's. I love this group.

Free Music Review: An underrated group.
Hit: 4 Stars

In my mind, the Association has not quite gotten the credit they deserve. Their best songs rank among the best of 60's pop, which is saying something. Granted, none of their lead singers have superb voices, but when the voices blended, there could be an almost ethereal, otherworldly quality, which put them ahead of most vocal groups. Though they seemed to have been very inconsistent in their songwriting, this album does seem to have a lot, if not most, of their best songs. "The Time It Is Today" I think is one of the better "message" songs of the time, looking at specific social conditions of the time while at the same time being very personal. When Russ(I am assuming) sings "All your world is all your fears, they don't change but pass in years, I know," I believed he knew exactly what he was talking about. Another quality that the Association had is straight ahead sincerity, something which seems to be lacking today in this age of angst and self-pity. My sense is that so-called serious rock critics don't give "clean cut" vocal groups the credit they deserve. (as if ALL of young life is spent in sexual frustration and aggression, which rock critics seem to love) Well, tough. The Association made a handful of classics, and they deserve their place as one of the best vocal groups of the 60's. Period.

Free Music Review: Excellent Sixties Pop!
Hit: 5 Stars

I thoroughly enjoy this album. Only about half of the songs were true "hits," and some of those were only minor hits, but it doesn't matter. All of the songs work together nicely and are a pleasure to listen to again and again. One gets the impression that the group really enjoyed making the music. If you like 60's pop, this is a keeper! I saw the group perform live in 86, and they put on a good show. I've never heard any of the group's other albums, but this has got to be the best of the bunch, as well it should. Finally, I liked having the lyrics on the CD sleeve (cassette version doesn't have them--not sure about vinyl) so I could finally make out what's being sung on "Along Comes Mary"--a classic tune.
