Free Music Notes for The Greatest Hits!Free Music Review: A Lingering Influence Hit: 5 StarsMy parents had this album on 8-track shortly after its 1968 release. I was only 4 or 5 at the time, but even then I remember songs like "The Time It Is Today", "Everything That Touches You", "Enter The Young", "Time For Livin'" and "Six Man Band" coming through on the tape deck in the car during various rides as a kid living in Belvidere, IL at that time (Back then, the haunting drums during the instrumental segments on "Requiem For The Masses" scared the daylights out of me). Later on, while in high school, some friends of my parents owned this album on record, and they were surprised that a 17-year-old was so taken by this album that they let me borrow it for a week. I didn't play any other albums on my turntable that entire week. Needless to say, I have since bought this album on CD, and it remains one of my all-time favorite albums. It's a shame that Brian Cole's death in 1972 might have sealed their fate commercially back then, but I am nonetheless thankful to Russ, Larry, Ted, Terry, Jim, Jules and Brian for inspiring kids like me to get into music, including playing guitar. This album is a must have if you like music from that era.
Free Music Review: Up and Down Hit: 3 StarsI spent High School listening to this band. What amazes me is they could record Never my Love, then jump to songs that make no sense. This is a terrific collection of about 7 songs. Beyond that is a mixture of a band trying to find their sound in the 60s.
Free Music Review: An appalingly mediocre collection from a great band Hit: 2 StarsThe Association, like the Turtles, is a band cursed more for what they *did* than what they didn't do; represented in the public's consciousness largely for "Cherish," "Never My Love" and "No Fair at All," The Association are usually dismissed as wimps extraordinaire. If the above three hits (and maybe Along Comes Mary) are all that you're looking for, this compilation might suit your needs perfectly, but is has a heck of a lot going against it that must be weighed in.Firstly, the tracklisting for this disc has very little going for it. This compilation was released, if I figure this correctly, right after "Birthday," which didn't sell as much as the band's record company hoped. So much like what Capitol tended to do every time the Beach Boys "disappointed" 'em (you know, uh, with "Pet Sounds," for example), the Association's label put out...well, this. Look at the tracklisting: it repeats an amazing part of the recently-released "Birthday," and then throws on the band's "hits" almost as an afterthought, including a re-recording of "Enter the Young" and the new "Six Man Band." I won't even go into the fact that what I rank as the Association's two best albums--"Renaissance" and "Association"--are either mis-or-completely-un-represented. So what's a person to do? Ignore this comp completely, and get the Japanese "From the Original Master Tapes" CD. Sure, it costs a bit more, but it sounds a lot better, has a heck of a lot more tracks, and also includes this CD's two "Exclusive" tracks (the two new ones mentioned above). And while it doesn't have anything from "Association," the other Cd at least adds "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" and several other worthy tracks that this disc passes over.
Free Music Review: The Association recorded more than whats on this album! Hit: 3 StarsI completely agree with the first reviewer,If you just like the songs, this is all you need. But........If your a fan of the group, well, this really doesnt cut the mustard.I guess we just wait, or shell out big bucks for the imports. As far as sounding too "vanilla", well I cant say, frankley I cant stand Motown, "rhythem and blues" or anything in that catagory because It all sounds the same to me, unimaginative and repeatative so I am not quite sure how something is classified as "vanilla" :)
Free Music Review: A GREAT ALBUM Hit: 4 StarsI OWN THIS ALBUM AND IT IS VERY MUCH RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE ROMANTIC MUSIC AND BALLADS OF THE 1960'S. I ENJOY ALL THOSE GREATEST HITS SUCH AS "NEVER MY LOVE" "WINDY" AND "CHERISH". BUY IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
