Even though the tempo of this cd is relatively hushed, "The Gleam" becomes more attractive with each listen. It took me a week to fully like it. I was immediately enamoured with 'Backwards With Time', 'If it's the Beaches', and 'When I Drink'. The lyrics on "The Gleam" are clever and at times heartbreaking. There are all kinds of anomalous sounds going on as well: flamenco guitar style, a few notes of a xylophone, an impassioned violin, folky harmonica, piano, and a few moments of falsetto vocals.
Be patient with this cd and it will eventually reward you with good feelings. However, a first time Avett Brothers listener should start elsewhere.
