Free Music Notes for The B-52'sFree Music Review: This isn't the "Love Shack" B-52's Hit: 4 StarsMany considor this to be the best new-wave album. I think that honor belongs to "Are We Not Men?", but this is close to that title. I'm sorry to say that the best songs on this disc are the "classics", "Rock Lobster", "Lava", "Hero Worship", and "6060-842". As I stated above, this album grows on you. I listened to it the day I bought it, and didn't really see the appeal. However, the songs started to grow on me. They grew on me slowly but largely. Now, I considor this to be one of the 70s best. A slightly overrated album, but great nonetheless.
Free Music Review: Too Weird Hit: 2 StarsI don't get the appeal. I'm not even sure how to categorize this. Surfing music on crack? Whatever it is, it's too weird for l'il 'ol me, and that's all I really gotta say about that.
Free Music Review: The Best B-52 album Hit: 4 Stars Many of my friends hate the B-52's.. frankly at times I don't blame them... their music circa cosmic thing was so overplayed when I was growing up. Yes Cosmic thing is a fun album and every party I attended in MIddleschool usually ended up playing Love shack before the night ended... but it lacks something compared to their first album.. or could be thought of as over burdened.
Secondly I admitt to loving Pop music.. But the First B-52 album sounded so fresh and unique.. the band members weren't great musicians technically... but so much more energy radiates through when the band itself plays and writes their music as opposed to having other musicians and tons of production.
This is just a fun album and one of the most interesting sonic experiences out there. The first four songs are what makes this album classic.. Planet claire is the perfect way to immerse the listner into the B-52's sound. Starting with the soft menacing guitar at the begining then breaking out the organ... enter fred...
Lava and Hero Worship are good songs, they aren't the same quality as the first four and by this point in the album feel alot less fresh and creative.. the songs at the end tend to run a bit together.. while there's a moon in the sky and 6060-842 get a bit annoying an repetitive..
The cover of Downtown feels appropriate as a closer..
Overall this album is a good time and probably the most interesting and invigorating B-52 album...
Even some people who hate the bands later material will concede that the music on this album is something worth hearing.
Free Music Review: I like whammy, cosmic thing and wild palnet way more!! Hit: 4 StarsI mean this is a first cd so you have to kind of give them a break but it has 52 girls on it so you got to love that as well as Palnet Claire and Rock Lobster. Other than that just the song about the phone number are the real solid tracks I think otherwise kind of bland.
Free Music Review: Twist around the fire, have fun! Hit: 5 StarsI remember how captivated I was when I first heard this album, and how impressed I was by the B52s sound: it was part pop, part surf, part 60s, part "Monster Mash". Words cannot express how in awe I was of Fred's Jersey-tinged, slightly effeminate bark, and Cindy and Kate's esoteric harmonies. But I can tell you that this album made me learn how to dance because I couldn't resist it. It also made me howl with laughter at the sheer joy and pleasure of their tunes. Everyone has their favorites but give me "Dance This Mess Around" anytime. Even their all-too-short cover of "Downtown" was nothing less than inspired brilliance and fun.
This album is so friendly and fun that to not like it is, in my opinion, snobbery. So come down of your high horse and pick up this CD.
